NaNoWriMo 2010 - Who's in?

Well, summer is over and November looms just over the horizon. Who's going to take the 50K challenge this year? I did 2008, but skipped last year. I've decided to give it a shot this year since I'm recently laid off and will have quite a bit of time on my hands.

Who's in and what kind of story are you planning to write?

I've been hemming and hawing over this very question myself lately. I think I may completely switch gears and try to write a western of some sort. I've been feeling inspired after playing Red Dead and rewatching Deadwood on DVD. I just need to come up with a solid major plotline. Hopefully I can figure something out within the next 2 months...

So, who's down for a little masochistic authoring?

I'm not really a writer but I have an idea I think would work better as a novel than a comic so I think I'm going to give it a shot.

The short synopsis: A young man wakes up one night to discover that he's duplicated in his sleep. The next year it happens again, to both of them, and the year after that, and after that.

November huh? I'd give it a shot if I wasn't already writing a 15 - 17 page undergrad senior History paper on coffee and coffeehouses. Oh, and 3 5 page book reviews for the same class, plus an 11 - 15 page series of essays for a European history class. So yeah....if I wasn't already tackling all that around Oct - Nov I'd give it a shot....though I must admit, after all the research writing I've been doing lately, I've been curious to try my hand at fiction.

Wait.... weren't you going to write that last November?

Yes. Graduation is at the end of October, fully launching my indie game developer life.

I'm planning to spend a couple of hours each day working on universe-building and lore-fluffing as part of my routine, so the timing couldn't be better.

As for the first story? Think a Boris Vallejo painting come to life, like maybe this one:

I think I'm going to try. I finished in 2006 and 2009. I'm pretty happy with both. Last years' was inspired by Silent Hill (which I haven't played in years) and C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy (which I was reading last Fall). I'm thinking of bringing my main character from last years' novel into this year but have it be a self contained story (ie: not a sequel).

But I tend to break their "don't worry about editing!" rule, as I'm constantly editing for clarity. I want it to be something someone can read and understand and have a good flow to the story.

I came up with the idea earlier this year, just haven't done anything with it yet.

I'm in. I'm a municipal liaison for my town. NaNo is my favorite time of the year. My wife, however, is not as big a fan of November...

Yeah, I'm in this year, as well. I'm juggling a couple ideas, I'm just not sure which one I'll do yet (which is not really unusual, for me).

We should start a brainstorming thread. I have a few ideas for NaNo 2010, but rather than only choose one, I'm thinking this year I'll just throw everything into one big pot and give it a stir. I'd love feedback during my planning process.

Damn, I'm actually tempted to join. But I will have just gotten married and will be turning my focus from gettin' hitched to gettin' money for school. But I love the idea of doing this.

Averaging it out per day that's about 1670 words per day for the month, or about 6 pages per day. That sounds intimidating, as I don't have much free time in life. It seems I just talked myself out of this.

During our write-in sprint sessions, some of our more prolific typists can get more than 500 words written in 15 minutes, which means that, with a good plan (or a complete disregard for typos and quality content) you could finish your daily wordcount in ~50 minutes.. More realistically, it's usually a few hours of writing/thinking every day. But many people do less during the week, and then go through marathon sessions on offdays or weekends.

I hope you change your mind and join us, but I completely understand if your real life is too busy. *cough*wuss*cough*

I want to give it a shot, but this year I am being a good student and have been dedicating most of my free time to school.

Yeah, we tend to do a series of timed challenges, and it's simply amazing how much you can pump out in a relatively short amount of time (of course, as you said, it works much better if you actually have plan).

And, one day, I may even manage to keep on-track enough to actually reach 50K myself.

Yeah, sucks, but it may turn out for the best. My job got moved overseas so there are major benefits to go back to school and whatnot.

Ahh, I remember this story idea. Good one; you should do it.

Brainstorming thread is a good plan. It would be a good place to bounce ideas.

I'll try it again. I still don't want to touch my best idea, but I've been tossing around a few ideas involving a bunch of stories in the same world/setting, and I've been wondering if I can tie them all together.

I tried it last year unofficially. I got 10k words in and stopped. Dunno why.

Dear Shu,

I strongly suggest watching Way of the Gun and Four Brothers to get an outside perspective on westerns.

I've seen Way of the Gun, crazy movie, but haven't seen Four Brothers. I'll have to look it up.

Although I'm thinking of sticking with the 19th century western, not something modern.
