Mass Effect 2 is coming to the PS3

Joystiq just reported from the EA conference at Gamescom that ME2 is coming to the PS3 in Jan 2011.

ME2 is my front runner for game of the year for the 360. I'm glad it's coming to the PS3 because more people need to enjoy this game.

I wonder how they're going to handle the first one, as IIRC that was published by Microsoft. Though I don't know enough about the VG biz to know if that means exclusivity or not.

Oh man, if they found a way to put both games plus DLC on one BR disc I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

EDIT: I would suppose that "melding" both games onto one disc would be a good loophole in case there was some sort of exclusivity contract for the first game?

MS published Ninja Gaiden 2 but somehow that was ported as well, it might be a matter of who actually owns what. And so far this looks like only ME2, which seems pretty damn stupid to me.

Maybe they'll release the first one as Mass Effect Sigma.

I just finished reading that somewhere, which I agree would be incredibly stupid. Still, it might open up the way for them to tell the backstory in inventive ways, such as an interactive graphic novel or some such thing. I suppose ME2 could stand on its own, but there is so much to the story's continuation that they are dooming sales (IMHO) if they only go with the second game.

Yeah, I'm conflicted about this. I'd like to play both games, and don't have a 360, so it's weird to have the second coming out but not the first.

I'm hoping they port the first one, as well (whether on the same disc or not). If not, I may have to try out my 360 for at least one game, and then just play the sequel on the PS3... well, assuming I like it, of course.

This would work. But you do end up losing the savegame which does help and just feels right.
I am glad one of my favorite games gets to be played by more people. But am really...disappointed that its happening at the same time. They have to have some kind of opening movie covering the first one. If they don't...its just not going to have the impact. So many of the story elements are explained in the first and not even touched on in the second as story but instead in action or in the RESULTS of the first. Wrex for example.
It's going to be...unique.

I'm sure they won't leave PS3 owners in the lurch regarding back story. They'll come up with something.

Anyway, as you can see from the uniform 100% yays in Duke's thread, this is a freaken awesome game and a win for PS3 owners.

Tempted, but without the original, and with no way to transfer a save from the PC, I'll pass.

Take the 360 version of ME1, record every conversation tree with video, and make basically a quick-time event of every major plot point. The PS3 player would be able to make the same set of decisions via watching a multi-branched movie.

Saldy you would miss so much. The entire fucking theme of the game stretches across the first and the second. And from what it looks like the yays in the other thread are actually because they are going to play either of the other versions first. Which, it only makes sense if its the 360 version they will then play the 2nd on it.

But I guess all that matters is they play the first. Missing it is really hobbling the 2nd horribly.

This is great news. While they may be missing out on some minor subplots, I don't think PS3 owners who play ME2 will miss out on that much. Besides, if they want to play ME, they should play the better version on PC.

But if they had a PC to play ME1 why wouldn't they just play ME2 on PC as well?

edit:

Just saw MS's response to this:

Microsoft has responded to today's announcement of Mass Effect 2 coming to PlayStation 3. The game first launched in January 2010 for Xbox 360 and PC, and is now headed to PS3 a year later in January 2011.

"With both Mass Effect titles launching first on Xbox 360 combined with the wealth of available paid downloadable content on Xbox Live today, Xbox 360 remains the best place to experience the Mass Effect franchise," a representative said in a statement given to IGN.

Mass Effect 1, first published by Microsoft in 2007, will remain exclusive to Xbox 360.

"And the original Mass Effect is absolutely an Xbox 360 exclusive, making Xbox 360 the only place to get the full Mass Effect experience," the company added.

...I think they just made me want to buy Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 out of spite.

You better hope your PS3 is still working by then.

Obviously it's impossible, but a remake of ME1 without the performance hiccups and some of the tweaks form 2 would be awesome.

Is there some sort of contract MS has right now that prevents something like that from happening if there's enough want for it?

MS should just stop being asses about it and let PS3 owners get in on the fun. Like Nintendo should have done with the Goldeneye remake. Gamers first dammit!

Honestly you can youtube/read the wikia for a lot of Mass Effect 1 and just go straight into 2.
