[Rumor] Gearbox Working on Duke Nukem Forever?

A part of my brain can't really comprehend that in August of 2010 I'm still writing stories about Duke Nukem Forever. When developer 3D Realms imploded under the weight of lawsuits and lowered expectations, I thought it was finally the end of the saga. Until today.

According to Kotaku's anonymous sources, 2K Games has given over development to the long, long, long in the coming Duke Nukem Forever to Gearbox (Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, Aliens: Colonial Marines). Earlier this year Gearbox confirmed that at one point they had been developing Duke Begins, a since canceled prequel to the series. Now they've been tasked with completing one of the most infamous games of all time.

Both 2K Games and Gearbox declined to comment on the rumor, but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford indicated that the matter may be cleared up at PAX Prime early next month.

The problem, obviously, was never the game itself, but 3DRealms. If Gearbox has the reigns I'm sure they'll finish it quick. In fact, I would be that they wouldn't even show anything unless they had a fair bit of work done already.

Duke was never a good enough idea to be worth all this bullshit. He was barely a good enough idea to be worth Duke3D.

And I'm surprised at anyone who didn't like Duke3D. Maybe now it wouldn't be so hot, but at the time it was fucking amazing.

There were things about it that blew my mind when it came out, sure, but they weren't things about the character, or the story, or the world. They were things like weapon design, level interactivity, and the fact that it was faking 3D better than anything else faking 3D at the time. And strippers, I guess.

Regardless, all things that many other games very quickly picked up on, and have come along to do as well or better in the near-decade-and-a-half since. The list of games that did what Half-Life did as well as Half-Life very nearly starts and ends with Half-Life 2. The list of games that have done what Duke 3D did as well as Duke 3D is, I think, considerably longer.

It might somehow end up being a fine game worth the purchase price. But it could be the best balls-out FPS ever made and I still wouldn't think it was worth the time, money, and teeth-gnashing that's gone into it over 14 years.

You guys are bitching because there might be a possibility that Gearbox, the makers of the awesome Borderlands, is working on the next Duke game. How the hell is that an issue for you guys? I don't care what you think of the Duke games, if anyone were to work on a Duke game then it would have to be Gearbox.

I hope this happens, not only because I like Gearbox games but because I want some Duke.

IN theory putting them on DNF could delay Borderlands 2. That's about the only possible negative for me. But I think the studio has grown to the point that it may not be an issue.

Also, what I find highly ironic is that is been over 10 years since Diablo II, yet no one is treating Diablo III the same way. Sure, we've been given playable snippets, but do we have an even general date? No. At this rate, Diablo III will match DNF's dev time, and no one will even blink.

Seriously, I think that with Borderlands, Gearbox shows that they are capable of making an extremely fun FPS with a great sense of humor. Add a dash of misogyny and I smell a fantastic Duke game cooking in their kitchen.

Well, at this point it's just a different game. Whatever went on during those 14 years...if it affects gameplay or not, I personally don't care. When the end product is here, I'm willing to give it a go. With the humor injected in Borderlands, that coupled with more of the raunchy style of Duke, I have less doubts. I actually have no doubts really - the first game was great and GB didn't want to put out a game unless he was 100% fine with it - and he never was.

It's like Michael Bay making a movie. He might be good at making films, but when the production studio allows him to do everything (no other minds at work) it can turn into a mess. See SW Episode 1-3. Gearbox is a great choice. They can make squad-based tactical WWII FPS's and a co-op Diablo clone in the first-person. It's impressive.
