Crackdown 2 Producer Talks Criticism, DLC

While the just released Crackdown 2 has reportedly enjoyed robust sales, the critical reception has been a bit more tepid (we gave the game 4 out of 5 CoGs). Most common is the complaint that the game is less a sequel then an expansion pack. Ruffian producer James Cope had this to say about that accusation.
Quote:
"The timescale aspect did factor into that decision. At the beginning of the project we thought, Ok, there's potentially some effort savings here and we can focus that time in places where we can expand upon the gameplay. The gameplay always won out in those decisions. Did it work? It's arguable."
Cope also announces the first two DLC packs for the game. "Toy Box" brings back the Keys to the City mode from the original, which lets you drop any object you want into the city in free play mode (it won't work on missions). Next up is "Deluge", and Cope wouldn't divulge much about it, except to say it will add a "completely new way to play the game". Dates and prices were not given for the DLC.

Crackdown 3 will probably be in the same city and have aliens. It will take 3 months to make.

Well, that's nice and transparent. Nice he acknowledges the shortcomings.

Based on the Ars review I read: intelligence.

I like they he talked about it as it is becoming pretty usual to here peoples issues with it.
However, the bugs(reported in most reviews but COG's) the lack of a new city(even though this one is maybe 5% different, arguably worse aiming, the problems with the vehicles(handling and random occurrences of being penalized for hitting a normal passerby that isn't actually there, don't really improve the gameplay What they did add...is...more of less. Its weird. Tons of zombies, less things to do. Hard to know what to think.

Didn't it take them a really short amount of time to make this game? Like 8 months or something? No wonder it doesn't feel like a completely new game.

Even Call of Duty games take more than that!

I feel like the city is a lot different, actually.

I haven't picked it up yet, but it doesn't really matter what the reviews say unless there's some game crashing bug. It's pretty much Crackdown, but this time I get to play with three of my friends online. That's all I'm showing up for, but I did enjoy my time playing the single player demo.

Well, the criticism pushed this back from a day one purchase to a 'further down the road/drop in price' purchase and I loved the original.

I'm still very excited for the game, but after a dozen run throughs of the demo, I felt like I'd prefer to spend some time with the games I have on the shelf first before I plonk down a hundred dollary-doos on this.

Main thing it is missing: A god damn shut up switch for the announcer. He says the same 4-5 things every 15 minutes. It goes from "heh" to "SHUT UP ALREADY"

Hit start, press back for options. Go to audio. Turn him all the way down.

You're welcome.

I've heard this also mutes the audio logs as well, so it isn't ideal. At least I've seen that in reviews.

To this day, not much holds a candle to the original's multiplayer sandbox shenanigans, and this is just that on steroids. New city or graphics engine be damned, you won't find better sandbox hilarity than this. Fuck, the wingsuit alone is better than all of RDR's multiplayer together.
