For those of you that have an iPhone/iPod Touch, you may be familiar with products made by Tapulous, particularly "Tap Tap Revenge". As gaming becomes more popular on mobile platforms such as the iPhone and Android, larger companies are beginning to invest more in developers for these platforms. Today, Disney has announced they have acquired Tapulous in a non-disclosed deal.
Disney is planning on making Tapulous the flagship name in its push into the mobile market, much like they did with the company "Playdom" who publishes games for iPhone and Facebook, including "Mobsters".
I do believe that an analyst with Forrester Research, Charles S. Golvin, puts it best: "The iPhone and iPod Touch are now critical gaming platforms". This is more and more true as companies like EA and Square Enix start releasing more and more games on the iPhone/iPod Touch platform.
Is this the beginning of more developer acquisitions on mobile platforms and market consolidation? Time will tell.
