GoG's David to Steam's Goliath

I saw this interesting post over on GoG just now:

Quote:
Sometimes it’s not easy being the “little guy” going up against a behemoth. Goliath’s massive stature casts a shadow over his challengers, and there are those who would simply retreat, cowering, back to their placid lives. But not David. While Goliath lets off some steam by offering those in his realm all sorts of grand discounts, in David’s kingdom, rock-bottom prices are already the norm; profit margins are slim. Instead, David relies on other tools, which he will use to topple his monstrous foe – all in good-natured competition, of course. Read on to find out how you, the citizens of David’s kingdom, can help him succeed in battle and share in the spoils of war (i.e. win one of 10 free games each day until July 4).
Then it goes on to list "David"'s strengths. It finishes with a contest:

Quote:
How to enter:
Twitter

Retweet this message, and we will pick six random winners every day to receive the game of their choice on GOG.com!

Facebook

Get a friend to “Like” GOG.com on Facebook, and post on our Wall with something like, “I found out about GOG.com from [insert your GOG.com user name].” We’ll randomly choose one “pairing” each day and award both the referred and the referrer a free game from GOG.com!

GOG.com

Share your favourite thing about GOG in this thread, and each day we’ll pick two users to win a free game of their choice! To be eligible to win, you need to post on that particular day; so if you don’t win the first day, try again the next!

Can David topple Goliath? Only you can make it happen!

That's a cute press statement, but seems like a weird comparison to make since they don't share the same catalog. More like Steam is the Goliath of retail games and GoG is the Goliath of old games.

That's my thinking.
Now, if this was a press release from Impulse, I could see the comparison.

They do share a lot of the same games. Many publishers are putting their classics on Steam as well, and I have to imagine that they sell better on Steam, simply because more people have Steam accounts.

I think I've purchased about the same amount of games on both, but if a game is on both for the same price, GOG all the way. Even the most reasonable and consumer-friendly DRM loses out to no DRM at all.

Meh to your comment, GoG deserves all the marketing they get and they were nice enough to give me a game on my birthday.

Not to say they do, but blatant marketing is just... Yeah, same thing happened to me when I watched the kevin butler speech and the psp video thing at e3 con for sony.

What irked me here, was the "While Goliath lets off some steam by offering those in his realm all sorts of grand discounts, in David’s kingdom, rock-bottom prices are already the norm;"

Which just isn't the case. A lot of stuff on GOG is expensive, and don't say it isn't because how much stuff is picked up during a sale. Something that is 10 dollars there, if I can get it for 2 bucks on steam, why wouldn't I? If I can do that for current games and not just old stuff, why wouldn't I? Posting a down on steam or down on sales story because "our stuff is always on sale" sort of voids the point to what steam is doing, and how pc gaming in general works now.

Because it's DRM free? Because you get extras beyond the game itself? I'm not saying I don't pick up cheap stuff when its for sale on Steam but GoG does have the DRM free thing and that's HUGE.

For you it might be, for me the price is all that matters. Granted getting the soundtrack and stuff on gog is interesting, and I would love to see every site do it, but drm just doesn't piss me off as some people, especially when it is just a log-in that automatically happens 90% of the time (the other 10% being games with other crap on top of it, apart from a cd-key).

GOG is a great service. I've bought a few titles on there (and want to buy many more), and they have worked perfectly every time, which is something I cannot say for Steam or Impulse.

Price is definitely not my only consideration when making a purchase. It's unfortunate that so many people feel that way, hence the wild success of Wal Mart.

I'm quite happy with my copies of the Master of Orion and Magic games.

I was a little annoyed with the copy of Fallout they have though. It's got some compatibility issues with the patches because they seem to be using the Euro version.

They've got Rebellion games on sale this weekend. (well, apparently games Rebellion has acquired the rights to, most of them look like previous Sierra titles)

I highly recommend Empire Earth 1 or 2 and Lords of the Realm 2.

Have heard good things about the Ground Control series but I called up my Steam backlog and it said no.
