Updated DS Hardware Announced for Japan?
I freely admit to being one of the people who dismissed the DS at it's launch as a gimmick doomed to a Virtual Boy-like fate. I also admit that I was very, very wrong in that case. A little less than four years later and the DS is plugging away, consistently selling more units than any other platform out there. So it comes with no real surprise that Nintendo is planning another revision of the DS hardware. Like the DS Lite, this update won't change how you play games so much as what else you can do with the device. A built-in camera will let you put your mug in some games. A more powerful WiFi antenna will let you connect to other gamers a bit easier. Lastly they're adding an mp3 playback feature, although no word was given on how those songs will get onto your DS (DS music store anyone?). This new hardware will launch in Japan by the end of the year for about $30 more than the current DS lite, with a worldwide rollout expected soon after. Source - Shacknews. |

This sounds pretty cool, but I kind of don't want to buy it on principle. Thankfully, I never bought the DS Fat, so I've only purchased one DS in my time, but I already own a camera and mp3 player, so I don't really feel like I need to buy another.

Yeah, I think it's still an unconfirmed rumor, right? Nintendo hasn't announced anything but a standard "no comment".
I don't need the new camera and music features, but a screen and wi-fi upgrade would be welcomed to just refresh the existing hardware. Last edited by Bone; 09-30-2008 at 06:20 PM. |

After PAX...I realize that I need either a DS or PSP. The Mp3 playback and stronger wifi might push me over the edge for the DS.

Yeah, this was just a story that Nikei (or however you spell them, it's early) was writing completely on their own. Some of the things in it could turn out to be true, but it would be good guesses at best.
On a semi-related topic, I've been pretty disappointed with the stories I've seen linked from Shack News, they don't seem to be terribly concerned with accuracy. Just a thought for future news posts, that's all.
