Question about BC PS3s

I have a 20Gig and I was wondering if it would play Japanese PS1 games. I found a copy of Rival Schools but its a NTSC-J game.

As I recall they retain their region locking for whatever console, so you won't be able to play a Japanese PS1 game in it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Can't answer the question specifically, but all PS3s have PS1 BC.

I'm such an idiot. I have a Japanese PS1 game right here. I can confirm as having tested it: on a US 60gig PS3, a Japanese PS1 game will not work. It says "This disc cannot be started due to region restrictions."

Yeah, the subject "Question about BC PS3s" throws us off. All PS3s do software emulation for PS1 titles. If you mean the launch units with hardware BC, that's a whole other story.

All PS3s use software PS1 emulation, including the launch units. As mentioned, you can't play PS1 or PS2 games outside your region. What you can do is download PS1 games from the Japan PSN store and they will work fine. Of course, you need a payment method for your Japanese PSN account.

You can also play Japanese PS3 games on your American PS3, since the PS3 era games are region free.

You can do that with the PC Engine games on there as well, and they'll work on both the PS3 and PSP. I've been tempted to give that a shot, but I have too much to play anyway. You should be able to get Japanese PSN card codes from PlayAsia without paying much (if any) overhead, they just email you the code and you use it.
