Want a $15,000 graphics card?

I'm on XFX's e-mail list, and they've been sending me e-mails about the "theft" of a XFX HD 5970 Black Edition LIMITED - Serial #68. The first e-mail sort of threw me off, but a disclaimer at the bottom said that it was a "gamertainment" campaign - ie advertising.

Now the card has shown up on eBay, and XFX e-mailed me a link to the auction. They also noted that the final bid is binding and that person will be buying the card, along with the usual XFX warranty, etc.

Apparently this card delivers oral sex, rainbows, and unicorns, because right now the top bid is over $15,000.

I don't think it's even real, XFX are just buying it off themselves, it's just too pointless otherwise.

So they say that the card is stolen and then say it's on eBay? Someone should report the item to eBay as stolen goods. That, and the bid history has a serious whiff of dummy bids to it. I assume dummy bids are against the ToS, but it is eBay, so, who knows?

Heh, yeah, the bidding's up to $100,000. Somewhere along the way the bidding ain't legit.

The seller even states his previous listing got pulled because his account was in disrepute.

75% of the people placing bids have zero feedback and have bid only on this one item ever. I smell an xfx publicity scam. why would xfx send out emails to random customers about the "theft" and then send a link to the auction of a stolen card and claim that if anyone bought it they would honor the warranty?

Yeah, they had a disclaimer on the first e-mail (the one about the theft) stating that it was a "Gamertainment" campaign. That's just about the stupidest thing I've heard all week, but there you have it.

I think I'll be unsubscribing from their e-mail list so I don't get any more of this crap.
