Homicide: Life in MapleStory

The BBC is reporting that a woman has been arrested in Japan for killing her virtual husband. The heinous act was carried out because the aforementioned woman found herself divorced from her virtual husband in Maplestory.

The 43-year-old piano teacher is being detained in a Sapporo jail after being arrested at her home in southern Miyazaki and transported over 600 miles to Sapporo where her virtual husband lives.

Commenting on the alleged crime, a Sapporo police official said that the woman used the man's identification and password in order to log in to the game and virtually murder the man's character last May.

The same police official claims the woman told investigators that "I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry."

If the Sapporo officials decide to press charges, and the woman is subsequently convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of five years in jail and a fine of $5,000.

Very surreal, but it's Japan. I'll believe anything.

What would be the official charge? Hacking into someone's account? Destruction of property?

I could have sworn that when I read this story a few days ago, it was her actual ex-husband, not a virtual one. Bah, I probably read something wrong again...

I can usually find something to debunk these, "wacky japan" type stories. Like the one about women buying sheep thinking they were poodles...(such BS)
But this appears real. Apparently she "has been jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data."
I'm curious about the use of the word "murder" though, was it because the police used it, or because the journalist wanted an attention grabbing headline.

I guess she could be prosecuted under hacking laws....Colorado has some specific ones about accessing a network under false pretenses/using false credentials. I'm sure Japan has something similar.

However, the wacko in my hopes that she gets charged with murder, thus making adversarial multiplayer gaming illegal in Japan forever.

I was trying to decypher whether she was arrested for murdering the guy after already 'killing' his avatar in May or if this is just prosecution for destroying his character.

Lock them both up for playing a 2D side scrolling MMO. I think in America someone would get laughed at calling this one in.

I liked it, but I was still confused about what exactly happened.... Don't worry. That happens to me a lot.
