Dear Internet,
|
Frag Dolls
An interesting story I read over at SavyGamer. Since quoting tidbits will not do justice, you should instead head over to the site here and read yourself.
'Girl gamer marketing' is one of the reasons why everyone thinks gamers are mostly fat, sweaty, lonely stereotypes. |

Hmm... personally, I would have struck up a conversation with the girl. Tight shirt. Boobs. All men love boobs. You don't have to be a fat, sweaty and lonely man to appreciate a nice set of boobs.

Spoken truth. I don't care if a girl is there for her job. I'll go as far as I can.

Dear Internet,
|
Its not really journalism at all to begin with. The site is mainly for discount deals on games and the story is coloured with personal opinion, yes... indeed. But that does not necessarily disparage the point being made.

I really do not understand his point. First, it is quite obvious he doesn't like Ubisoft. I read some of his comments at the bottom and he feels that Ubisoft hasn't released a quality game in years. He believes that new PoP is a poor product yet wanted to check it out anyways. Then, he complains about there being an "Ubisoft cheerleader" and no developer on the floor that he could speak with.
What did he plan on discussing with the developer? How crappy he believes that game is or why Ubisoft sucks? I don't fully understand why he was mad. Is it because he hates Ubisoft or because he couldn't close with a beautiful girl? |

And I agree. He had one point about Ubisoft hiring PR people who weren't knowledgeable of the product they were showcasing, but that's the same argument 60+ people use on employees of Home Depot when they don't know the exact global coordinates of spacing washers and hex head #6 Masonry bolts. Other than that, it smacks of nerd rage. Not geek rage, which is different and spurned on by crappy DRM, but just outright Nerd Rage. A far more sinister thing.

Yes, it's true. This man has no dick.
So was this intended to be the mental narration of an elitist gamer with delusions of self-importance? Because that's pretty much what I got from it. Any point he would have made was vastly overshadowed by anger and a sense of superiority. I'll rewrite the article real fast: Quote:

Actually, having witnessed it myself at Pax East, I do get the point.
(although I did repeatedly skip both Rockstar and Ubisoft booths) Everyone I spoke to knew their stuff and were either really knowledgeable and were there to actually present the product, or they had something to do with its production. Maybe it's because I was there as "press" and actually looked for people I recognized, or someone who looked like he was there for a reason. For most indie games, the guy at the booth was usualy the person who did the game, so it was a no-brainer to know who to ask questions. |

First, if he was a real gamer, he would not be hanging out at the Ubisoft booth. Second, it is Ubisoft, and I would entirely expect them to stoop to "sex sells". Third, "booth babes" are not hired for their knowledge of games. They are hired to fill in a skimpy shirt.

For what it's worth, this article itself is pretty dumb, but I myself have always been pretty anti Frag Doll. I have always felt that they are a seriously poor representation of girls in gaming culture. Also, I saw one pull some shady PR stuff whilst walking around PAXEast. I was checking out that used game display and I overheard a Frag Doll chatting up this guy and then slipping in mention of whatever game she was being paid to push. It was pretty silly.

Bedroom Wall Press

The sad part is, before they sold out to Ubisoft, I seem to recall the original "Frag Dolls" being an actual clan. Now it's just an extra label to slap on booth babes for Ubi kiosks. I wonder if any of the original members are even involved at all anymore, or for that matter if I'm even correctly remember them having ever been a real organization.

Indeed, the frag dolls were a professional gamer clan, they were quite competent, from what I've read.

I dunno, as an anecdote it read fine to me. And, if the girl is pretty, well fine, but would be nice if she knew something about the game other than the name.
