League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 1988

Now, disgraced scientist Emmet Brown has to put together a new team to combat the growing threat of the Lost Boys and their leader, a newly resurrected vampire kingpin Tony Montana: Transportation specialist Jack Burton, ex-commando B.A. Baracus, tech wizard Angus MacGyver and the mysteriously powerful femme fatale known only as "Lisa." But will Brown be able to stop the Lost Boys before time runs out?

If only this was released tomorrow this would have been so so awesome, instead of just an enormous April 1st cocktease.

Who the hell is that Lisa girl?

I'd definitely read this, but probably couldn't take too much of it. I suppose it says something of the times if the original heroes were who they are, and the 1988 heroes are from B-movies and B-television.

To my discredit I forgot her name. And I've only seen the series.

I plan on rectifying that soon.

This is a fine example of the kind of creativity the modern copyright system makes all but impossible.

The amount of legal wrangling and license fees you'd need to do this without getting sueds to hell is mindboggling to comprehend.

Kelly LeBrock. Can't believe I remember that off the top of my head. Plus she's Mrs Steven Segal. Not sure if that's still the case.

It is in my book. No great acting or writing. Stock characters completely caricature-ized. I don't know why it's got such cultural prominence among the 20-somethings and 30-somethings. Sure, it was fun to watch when I was six. But so was Teen Wolf.

It's great you guys love it. But let's not pretend it's more than it is.

I have seen it, actually. And as soon as you mentioned the name, 'her costume' made sense. The first thought in my head was it was supposed to Demi Moore's character from Ghost.

I think you should read the Wiki section on it's release and reception. The film is quite well regarded. I don't know why you hold it in such seemingly low opinion?

The film went on to gross $210.61 million in North America and $170.5 million in foreign countries, accumulating a worldwide total of $381.11 million.
I dunno about you guys, but what B-Movie ever grossed this much? Just because you hold it in a lower opinion (not gonna argue with you there, just disagree) doesn't automatically classify it as a B-Movie.

Generally (and this is just my opinion as well) B-Movies to me are generally low grade, terrible effects, worse acting, and practically always flops in the box office, and are generally entertaining because of how bad they are, or because of a single cult character who carries the film (Bruce Campbell is a perfect example of a B-Movie Chin-er, actor.). Personal opinion generally has little sway on if it's a B-Movie or just general sci-fi.

It's like Saying Ghostbusters was a B-Movie because it wasn't that good (And don't take that as me saying GB was bad...fucking love that movie. Just an example)

Back to the Future has cheesy elements and acting at parts, but that's intentional. A B-movie is typically cheesy because it doesn't have a good budget and has either bad or poorly directed actors.

More Jack Burton = more gooder.

"What's this say?"
"Hell of Boiling Oil."
"You're kidding..."
"Yeah, I am, it says 'Keep Out.'"

Damn... there really needed to be more Big Trouble.

The Back to the Future series is one of the most successful and culturally relevant sci-fi film series ever made. If it's a "B-movie" then so was the entire Star Trek and Star Wars series.

I mean yeah, they're fun movies, not high art or anything, but they were produced by some very talented people, acted well, well directed, so I don't really see how you can put them in the same category as Ed Wood and Roger Corman and early Sam Raimi.

Pretty much how I feel about it as well. One could argue that it's still a B-Movie (honestly, almost all movies from the 80s could be argued as such) but I think the quality of the end product AND how well it was received by the general populace make it more than a B-Movie. It's not like Back to the Future is a cult classic, after all.
