Problems running HL2/Portal?

I've been trying to play Portal, but every time I start the game I see the Valve logo, and then the screen turns black. Right after that it crashes and Windows tell me that "Half-Life 2.exe is not working". Has anyone else run into this?

I've checked the Portal and Half-Life 2 forums with no results.

Try verifying the files through steam.

If you don't know how:
Right click, properties then under local files choose verify integrity of game cache.

It might find a corrupt file or two, which it will then re-download.

If it does not work, a driver issue would be my next guess.

I tried that, with no luck.

It could very well be a problem with my ATI drivers, which wouldn't surprise me. However, I suspect that there would be a little more about it online if that were the case. I haven't had a problem running any other games so far, so I'm not sure what the deal could be.

Sounds like something to do with the source engine then if it is HL2 and Portal it would be nice if you could try Left 4 Dead if it installed.

The issue has been resolved. I installed a couple of small Windows updates, and I also closed and restarted Steam. One of those worked, and my guess is that it was one of the Windows updates.

Nothing to see here folks!

Actually, closing and reopening steam probably did it.

Most likely, although one of the Windows updates addressed "compatibility issues with legacy software" or something like that.
