Legacy of Ys: Books I & II Announced for DS

Atlus has once again thrown their hat into the classic RPG ring with the announcement of Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for the Nintendo DS.

This remake of the classic will include the first 2 'Ys' games on one cartridge. In addition to updated graphics, remixed music, new items and touch controls, both games will also include four-person local multiplayer!

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II is scheduled for release on February 10, 2009 for an MSRP of $34.99.

Sweet, that is pretty good news. I am definitely looking forward to the release. I have never played a Ys game, but have always wanted to.

I'm happy they've combined these for the US release. My only experience with the series (other than the awful PSP port of the PS2 game) was renting Ys 3 (I think) on the Genesis. This is definitely one to keep an eye out for.

It's fun to play updated versions of these old RPGs, but I think I'd prefer new DS RPGs done in a similar style. I've been enjoying Dragon Quest 4 and seeing it with updated graphics is neat, but I know the story pretty well already and it doesn't have any form of advancement system that's become common in RPGs lately. I guess if you missed the NES era, it's cool to be able to get your hands on these games in a shinier form.

Have I just missed them or does the DS not have a lot RPGs that aren't remakes? I figured the system would have plenty, but I haven't seen too many originals. Did I overlook them?

These were released as separate games in Japan, so we're getting a great deal here.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is a good one, and people love The World Ends With You. Dragon Quest 9 qualifies as a Big Deal.

What? This game needs remixed music? Can't they just use the original?

I don't know if I'd define that particular sub-genre gamer stereotype as "people".

Yay for more old school RPGs I haven't played before. I need to win the lottery so I can play games all day. Instead of working* all the time.

*By working I mean posting at CoG.

Partners in Time was pretty decent, but I wasn't a fan of The World Ends with You for whatever reason. Dragon Quest 9 might be something to check out, though. But have the Dragon Quest games ever given us any interesting advancement/customization systems? DQ8 had alchemy for item generation, but I don't think there were any real interesting decisions to make with your characters. Just a straight leveling system, if I recall. Maybe pick a stat to give a little bump to? I forget.

DQVII had some very deep character customizing from what I remember.

I'll add this one to my list of "watch for a price drop" games. All of my games are "watch for a price drop" games nowadays, though. Sad panda. Is it turn-based?

South Park has poisoned my soul, and I don't even have cable/satellite.

I can't speak to DQ8, but DQ3, 7, and probably some in between had job systems.

No, it's an action RPG series. In fact, there wasn't even an attack button in the original Ys 1 and 2; you just walked into enemies and they took damage. These remakes add an attack button to make them a little more Zelda-like.

I remember playing Ys III on SNES. I enjoyed it quite a bit, I'll have to keep an eye out for this. I always wondered about Ys, because the 3rd was the only one I had ever played/seen.
