[360/PS3] Resident Evil 5: Lost In Nightmares Review

Resident Evil 5: Lost In Nightmares Review

Title: Resident Evil 5: Lost In Nightmares
Platform: 360/PS3
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
ESRB: M (Mature)
MSRP: 400 MSP/$4.99 (360/PS3)
Editor: Andrew 'TrackZero' Hodder

Quote:
What's Hot: Great atmosphere; fantastic visuals and audio effects; Homage to the original Resident Evil; Revamped Mercenaries mode

What's Not: No save games in the bonus chapter
You may have noticed a slew of new Resident Evil 5 content up on Xbox Live or PSN last week. Chief among these is the new DLC pack, Lost In Nightmares. The pack features the aforementioned new mission, the Mercenaries Reunion multiplayer mode, some new unlockable figurine bonus material as well as new achievements/trophies. Coming in at five dollars, there's definitely a good amount of content to be found here.

First off is the new bonus chapter Lost in Nightmares, where you'll be playing through what was originally featured as flashback material from the main RE5 game. This time the players take control of Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield as they investigate Ozwell E. Spencer's mansion (founder of Umbrella Corporation). You'll immediately be struck by how much of a throwback the mansions design is from the original Resident Evil title. The first third of the chapter largely consists of puzzle solving and back story reading mixed into what is a total sense of deja vu for fans of the series. As you progress further into the mansion, you'll come into some proper fight sequences with a new form of enemy and uncover more of the motivations behind Umbrella Corporation.

Players will utilize the environment and rely more on strategy than gun play as the chapter comes to a close. Left with scare resources, you'll find a more traditional survival horror mindset (which is a far cry from the shooting gallery that makes up most of the core RE5 game). Following this you'll be treated to a boss fight with Wesker; also as seen in flashbacks from the main story. All said, this bonus chapter should run a time somewhere between one to one and a half hours. Things to keep in mind is that none of your gear will follow you from the main game to this bonus episode. While checkpoints are present throughout, your progress will not be saved; though that isn't much of an issue considering the chapters length.

The Mercenaries Reunion mode (what most of you would think of as "Horde Mode") features a new cast of characters to choose from. Included in this DLC pack are Excella Gionne and Barry Burton, both with their own new unique load outs of weapons and gear. Excella is definitely the standout however, with a devastating new machine pistol and a grenade launcher loaded with flash grenades, it offers an interesting new 'support role' style of load out.

Lastly the pack includes new bonus figurines. They're still unlocked by completing various modes or challenges within the new content, but feature many of the new characters, costumes and opponents.

Keep in mind, while this DLC is priced quite well at five dollars, this content as well as all the costume packs and the next bonus chapter will be available two weeks from now in the Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (PS3/360). For people who haven't picked the game up yet but have been considering it, you'll probably want to hold off until that's released. But for those who already own RE5, this DLC pack is a great time.

Score: 5 out of 5 CoGs

Drew says, "The Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares DLC is exactly what any fan wants. A new high quality mission with solid pacing, lots of fan service, as well as great additions to the mercenaries mode and all for an excellent price point."

*Note - Review based upon the 360 version of game.

I agree wholeheartedly with you guys. The mission was a really unexpected (at least on my part) and well made re-envisioning of the old style RE survival horror dropped into the beefy new engine. There was a great emphasis on teamwork and the lack of ammo kept the intensity high. As much as I love RE4 and RE5, I would line up day one to buy a full length RE game that focuses on this style of gameplay.

I gotta disagree with 5/5. It was a throwback to the old games, sure, but there was literally 1 type of enemy, and the final bossfight was pretty terrible, I thought.

Totally agree. DLC is usually handme downs that didn't make it into the final game for a reason. Meanwhile this is probably my favorite level in RE5 and that says a lot.

I'm assuming the Gold edition will be $40-50 so it seems to be cheaper to buy the original for $20 and get the DLC separately.

From what I recall, at least on 360, the Gold edition features the main game, with a DLC code to get the extra missions/costumes off Live for free.

The PS3 version will have all the content on one disc.

Uhhhh, I think it's the same main game with the extra achievements for the DLC. Has /1400 points total to earn in it.
