On a more serious note, what the hell do you do for a date when you're broke?

Like, my brain only really knows the like, old school, dinner/movie/coffee kind of date, where the dude picks up or meets the girl some place, they have a meal, he pays for the whole thing, and then there's some awkward ending to the whole thing where I don't know where to go next.

jjohnson gives me crap about this idea, kinda, he says this is a lot of silliness, that most women don't even like it when guys pay for them anymore, and anyway, don't sweat it if you're broke just find a way.

But he's never very specific on what to do instead when you really don't have the money to do anything but maybe wander around in a park or some shit.

I dunno, my brain still thinks "I need to do something that demonstrates my relative affluence." It can't think of a date where I'm not spending money on something, because spending money seems like part of the point.

I can think of things I could do at home, like cook, and watch a movie, or something like that, but I always saw the home visit as a later in the relationship thing.

I dunno. I'm just drawing a blank. You can probably tell I don't have a lot of experience with this. The last date I had the girl showed up with two shirtless skater friends, and we wound up trying to watch a Phish concert from across the river, then went back to her place where I got stoned and then cut myself trying to open a bottle with a lighter.

Depends on where you live, I guess. The weather's getting nicer, so you can always meet outside and take a walk or sit on a park bench. The coffee date is relatively cheap compared to other options. If you're in a major city there are probably museums which are either cheap or free.

Every town has a weekly alternative newspaper with a ton of free events. Find something cool and unusual and go do it.

Or go fly kites with her at a park. Something quirky and nostalgic like that isn't a terrible idea either.

Girls love when you come up with free stuff to do. Some girls at least. I personally like a girl who likes outdoors, festivals, music, parks, hiking... the list goes on.

Edit: As far as affluence- look around, most people aren't rich. If you can enjoy things cheaply you're doing better than a miserable rich guy. Girls like that too.

Thanks for the date suggestions. There are a few sources of local events and stuff, so I'll keep an eye on what's happening next week, and maybe I'll do something free in town, followed by a good walk through the park or something.

The local soda fountain/candy shop was always a favorite date spot around here back when I was still paying attention to such things, maybe if I'm not totally flat broke I'll spring for a treat.

We'll see. Important thing is asking, I think. Need to really power through my lines this weekend, so that we can wrap up this scene and thus I'm free to ask her out.

How often do you guys talk to the person of your affection? I intermittently go crazy, I think. Sometimes, two or three days will pass and I won't mind a bit. Other times, a day without a single bit of contact feels like forever. I think it's mostly a product of whether I'm busy or bored off my ass, but I'm looking for an average amount of time here.

When I started dating my wife it was every single day, multiple times a day from the moment we got together.

Depends on how the both of you are. I don't live with my girlfriend yet, but we talk nearly every day. And if we don't talk we at least chatted on gchat.

Me and this girl in the same building have been heading out for smokes for a bit now.

All of a sudden it turns out like this. I ask her hey you ready for a break? and she responds give me two minutes. Five minutes pass and then I see her out of the building with someone else.

She then comes back and I ask her what's up? And she says she thought I already went out.

Should I take that as a clue?

This has happened 3 consecutive times now and I'm thinking it's a hint.

I'll admit I got a little huffy about it after that and then she told me I was erratic and need to grow up.

What do you think guys or am I just that fresh? I thought I had a good grip on things.
