Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Announced

The big reveal Ubisoft has been teasing all week has turned out to be Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Developed by Ubisoft Paris, this newest entry in the Ghost Recon series moves the conflict slightly further into the future than the previous Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter titles. Ubisoft promises that Future Soldier will "go beyond the core Ghost Recon franchise and deliver a fresh gameplay experience", but they don't yet say how the experience will differ.

A multiplayer beta for the game will be available this summer to purchasers of the upcoming Splinter Cell: Conviction on the 360.

One major gripe: the acronym stinks this time around. GRAW was gritty, and had cachet. GRFS is the sound you make when you're hit in the gut with a golf club.

"Future Soldier" makes me think of Halo's original subtitle, "Combat Evolved" for some reason. I wonder how future they're going for.

I really... really hope they overhaul the goddamn lobby interface this time. That's what killed GRAW 2 for us.

Really enjoyed the coop but everything else was crap. Would love if it returned to its roots but doubt it. Operation Flashpoint 2 is the cloest game ive played to OGR

Awesome, it's been way too long since GRAW2. I hope they don't take it too far into the future, I prefer bullets to lasers.

Actually, I think that "Advanced Warfighter" was just a take on the actual US military program the soldier tech off of which GRAW was based. The actual program's name? I believe it was Future Soldier.

I would have been excited about this until it was revealed that there would be a Wii version of the game as well. To me, that's a clear indicator that Ubisoft is still unable to get off the casual "mainstream" standard, despite recent promises made during the company's earnings call. If I'm on the mark, I hope that this game ends up failing. I've enjoyed the series to date, but if Ubisoft is going to refuse to man up to the times, I hope a company that will takes on the (military) squad-based shooter torch instead.

I hope even moreso that I'm wrong, and that there truly will be a properly funded and seriously talented force behind the project. But I'm not optimistic.
