Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Announced

Last night, Sega revealed what was formerly known as Project Needlemouse on Gamespot. And it's something that some people may scoff at while others rejoice: Sonic the Hedgehog 4... in episodic form, that is.

Here's the details from GAF

- Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1
- Released this summer on XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare
- Picks up right after Sonic 3 & Knuckles as far as story goes (so falls in Sonic 2 / Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles storyline)
- spin dash, power sneakers, and homing attack are in
- Wii version uses motion control, PS3 version uses Sixaxis
- Wii version runs at 480p, PS3 and 360 version run at 1080p
Aw, yeah. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 + Knuckles is one of the greatest games I played as a kid. Here's hoping they recapture the magic.

The Sonic Rush games give me hope for this. Someone out there didn't forget what made Sonic fun. I know having hope for this game is a mistake though. I've been burned on Sonic games so many times in the past. Please don't suck

Looks good. Let's see how much they charge per episode versus how much content is in each.

Yeah, it's the episodic thing that has me worried now. They've proven that they are listening to the fans by dropping the extraneous characters and sticking with good old school format. But then they introduce the episode concept and now I'm cautious all over again.

I can't keep offering up my heart just to have it repeatedly broken. But then, I also can't walk away from my spiky blue friend.

I think the download services are a smart choice for this game rather than trying to release another full priced Sonic game on a disc.

That's it, yeah, you keep on raping that little hedgehog. His balls are blue already.... no one will be able to tell....

Back on topic. While I think its good they are dropping all the shit, werewolves, evil dark one, all the other bullshit, I'm happy for Sonic to stay locked away in my childhood memories of some of the best games I played on my Genesis. I'm content enough not to want to go back. Anything since never happened.

Give with one hand and take away with another. Unless the episodes are reasonably priced, then I might think different. Otherwise it feels i'm being milked.

Since this seems to be where the main discussion is happening:

So yeah, I'm all for it, just a bit worried about the Episodes thing.

I don't like this "Episode 1" subtitle. I really hope Sega isn't gong to try to sell me a genesis game in installments.

You know, honestly, I don't even care about being nickel and dimed. If the game is as good as the Genesis installments I'd pay full price for it.

I just want a good Sonic game!

I hope they take a cue from New Super Mario Bros Wii with this. Keep the gameplay to the tried and true formula but use the new technology to enhance the environment. I'm more excited about this than I've been about a Sonic game in a long time. I'm a bit wary of the episodic format like the rest of you but I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

According to touchArcade it may be coming to the iPhone as well. I'm not sure why they would feel the need to keep that a secret.

It would certainly be cool if they built a new, real, sonic game.

However, even though this one looks legit, REMAIN SUSPICIOUS. Every single time a Sonic thing is announced, they talk about how it will be a return to Sonic's roots. Luckily, this one is 2D, which will certainly help.

So....the picture of Sonic in the emblem doesn't match up with the silhouette from the teaser. Does that mean there is going to be another character? Or do you think it was just a red herring all along?

Maybe we really ARE getting Pikachu in a sombrero...

They could be correct, the official site shows that there still is one platform to reveal, however why they would want to keep that a secret isn't clear...

As long as they stay the hell away from NSMBWii's clumsy attempt at multiplayer, they can steal from that playbook all they want.

Just do what the rest of us are going to do; don't get it on the Wii. For the time being, it's the easiest, most efficient way of avoiding motion control.

Best avoid it on the PS3, too. They're using the same motion control there.
