For an add-on it's OK but I'm not sure how many people will be prepared to use it. So much for the naysayers (not here but on many respected podcasts).

My fear is I'm getting near this point as well.

Mario 3D, Mario Kart 7, Paper Mario, Layton 5. The games are coming. I still wouldn't recommend that anyone buy it now, but there's good reason to hold on to it if you've already gotten one.

The conference is on the 14th, right? Is that when Nintendo is expected to announce the "new" 3DS, or whatever it will be called?

What's wrong with that peripheral? Judging from the picture, it's an add-on designed for Monster Hunter 3, probably third-party. Seems like it'd be good to have for the occasional game that needs it.

I think some people are more upset that it seems as if the rumors of a 3DS redesign are true.

I think I missed that news item, then? Because this is pretty obviously not a redesign.

Of course, I never got why people considered the fact that Nintendo updates its hardware a bad thing. This is a weird place to read about Nintendo news sometimes.

I like coming for the new and staying for the tried and true. Those games will be fun but not worth a new device in my opinion.

Rumors came out a couple of weeks ago that Nintendo was working on a complete overhaul of the 3DS that would feature a second analog stick and less emphasis on 3D, among other things. The rumors also said that Nintendo would release a peripheral that adds a second analog stick to existing 3DS systems. A lot of people were saying that there was no way that Nintendo would do a complete overhaul of the 3DS, but now that pictures are emerging of the aforementioned peripheral, it seems to point to a forthcoming overhaul, possibly to be announced next week.

I think that sums it up. I don't have a horse in this race, so I just tried to provide the facts.

I guess I'm the opposite. When I get a new system, I prefer there to be a game that I know I'll like, and then I'll branch out and try some new stuff. It's important to me that I not miss a proper Mario platformer or a Layton game or a new Zelda game (whenever that may happen).

A fair point. For me, the franchises are getting old. Not saying that they aren't still great games, just that I've grown tired of them.

I personally have been getting my rocks off on the downloadable stuff. I know some people consider that a weak point for the system but to each their own.

Also after a butt-ton of hours in Mercenaries not once did I find myself pining for a second stick.

But I do wish for some rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy

It would be hard to think that being tired of recycled franchises is the only reason I have little faith in this device.

I was tired of the Luigi's Mansion series an hour into the first one. I think I've figured out my problem: I need my games to either be fast paced, or involve a good deal of thinking/story/exploration. If a game is slow AND simple, I feel like I'm wasting my time.

Kid Icarus might as well be called something else or starring another character. It's a VERY different game than the first two.

Really though, I can understand the hesitance. Nintendo products are mostly about the franchises and software backing them up, so if that's not your priority then there are better choices out there. Me personally? I'd just as soon give up gaming and ragequit life as quit on Nintendo, but that's hardly a representative (or rational) perspective.
No, that's the reason most people get Nintendo consoles: for Nintendo's games. If you want other games, get a 360 or a PS3. The difference is, they've always been the best choice for portables, too, but now with the Vita looking better in every way, and third parties publicly disappointed with the 3DS, it looks like the only reason to get the 3DS might also be Nintendo's first party games.

Is it enough for me? Sure. But I'll also get a Vita, I'm sure. If I had to only pick one... ask me in two years.

The Vita is looking pretty awesome. It may be the first Sony system that I actually purchase. Yes, I know that sounds crazy to many of you.
