This. The Core was so cheesy it was funny. Avatar's use of it was groan worthy as the joke goes they might as well called it MacGuffinium.

Eh, I honestly couldn't fault the choice that much; Star Trek uses lots of real science names, especially particles, and it still comes across pretty poorly. It's normally pretty apparent that the head writer simply said things like "The SCIENCE is over-SCIENCEing. If we can just ANTISCIENCE it, maybe we can SOLUTION", and let the science guys fill the blanks.

With Avatar, it felt like they decided to lampshade it--not so much as an industry joke, but just to admit that the element is indeed a McGuffin. The audience needn't feel ashamed for completely tuning out when the humans talked about all of the awesome reasons they needed this material (to be honest, I can't remember what awesome-tastic properties it had. I'm just going to assume it allows you to grow USB-compliant hair).

I don't think it was ever explicitly said what the unobtanium did in Avatar. I assumed it was what made those mountains float. Because if it wasn't, why the fuck weren't they trying to figure out what made those mountains float!

Ron D. Moore has said that early drafts used the term tech to cover pointless technobabble. They decided on the actual babble on set.

Yeah, I wasn't making up that example. I seem to remember an interview giving pretty much that sentence verbatim.

Anyway, I am almost finished with a Game of Thrones, think of jumping into the next book, and an event towards the end reminded me of this. Spoilers for the book/show:

Square Enix may want to rethink the branding of their toys. Can you see it?

I'm not seeing the Square-Enix thing. All I get is a long intro that plays over and over again. Is it a rip-off of something else?

Yes, it was what made the mountains float. I recall that the main business guy (whatever his name was) had a piece of the material in his office that was floating.
