Game of the Decade - Nomination Thread

All right. Time to get this going for real.

Use this thread to nominate the games you feel are the best or most important from the 20-aughts. I think we should cut it off at 5 nominations per person. While limiting, it means less votes to count by hand out of what is bound to be many more different titles than in any of the GoTY threads. Hopefully it'll also mean people put more thought into narrowing their list down to five.

Don't feel constrained by the games that everyone recognizes were the huge success stories or the most critically acclaimed. This is a personal list and can be based on any criteria you like.

The earliest release date of a game, no matter the region, will determine its nomination eligibilty. So a game that was released in Japan in 1999 but wasn't translated for America until 2000 wouldn't be eligible. I doubt that will be an issue, but there had to be some kind of cut off, and this is the most globally fair.

Feel free to expand on any of your nominations or just post a numbered list. In order to give people time to research their choices I'll hold off on final tallies until January 31st, or a week after the latest post in the thread, whichever is first. Then I'll post a voting thread with the top ten titles.

Let the debate begin!

I'm officially nominating Team Fortress 2. I think I've put more hours into TF2 than any other game. It's been out for over two years and it's still fresh and fun due to the hard work Valve has put into it. Obviously I speak of the PC version and not the hill billy cousin on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

EDIT:
It helps if I do the rest. Here's the official list

Team Fortress 2
Portal
Half-Life 2+Episodes (can I do that?)
Fallout 3
Braid

World of Warcraft, if not for it's sheer ubiquity then for the ripple effect it has had on all RPG's, MMO, or otherwise.

That and it's a pretty damn good time your first run through.

That's Chrono Cross. I guess it's not eligible for the list, but it's one I was definitely considering. Oh, and Shenmue.

Note: These are not my nominations. A couple notable games that don't qualify, due to the rules. My nominations will be in another reply.

The title/award is a bit open, so while maybe not the "best" game, it's near impossible to ignore the trans formative impact WoW had on the gaming space. It gets my vote.

My votes are not on quality, but on importance. The games that have made the biggest impact on gaming as a whole.

World of Warcraft
Wii Sports
Grand Theft Auto 3
Halo
Guitar Hero

Halo
WoW
GTA III

EDIT: After seeing Karmakin's post, I'd add GH and Wii Sports as well. I think that is definitely a strong list.

I thought about doing that too but I decided to go with the games I absolutely loved over the last decade.

I'd actually like a thread for that as well. I just got from this topic that it should be important games. If it turns into just what we like, I may add that later.

Xbox: Halo: Combat evolved(suprising absoloutely no one)

Playstation: GTA III

Nintendo: Wii Sports

PC: Portal

Multiplatform: The elder scrolls IV: Oblivion

Edit: I couldn't pick just one, and I broke them down by system since it felt like fairest way to do it. Those are the games I would say are the best this decade has put out if held at gun point.

Influential Games:
  • World of Warcraft - For reaching sales numbers that no one could have predicted, bringing MMORPG gaming to the casual consumer, and dominating an entire genre.
  • The Sims - Released just a month into the decade, The Sims also surprised everyone with how successful it was and exanded the gaming market to an incredibly degree. It practically created, or at least elevated, the life simulator genre and has essentially no real competition years later.

Artistic Games:
  • Shadow of the Colossus - Probably the best argument in the decade for games as a unique art form.
  • Portal - The most engaging and surprisingly deep three hours in gaming.

Special Honor:
  • Super Mario Galaxy - For proving once again that there's a reason Mario and Nintendo are synonymous with video games.

It'd be too much work to do different threads for "most influential," "my favorite game," etc. Use whatever criteria you want.

Like I said in the earlier thread, World of Warcraft hands down. I don't think anything else even begins to approach it as far as influence this decade. Not only did it take the MMO genre out of niche status, but it continues to beat back any competitior 5 years after release.

I could accept Halo 1 I guess, due to it pretty much defining what a console FPS should be, and pretty much being unavoidable to everyone, love it or leave it. I really feel WoW deserves it though.

The guy with the gun is telling you that 8 is more than 5. Please trim the nominations down or I can't count your votes.

World of Warcraft
Team Fortress 2

That is my list, even if I do not really like three of the games on there.
