Sony ups the price of repair, offers Slims for Fats

Been researching repairs since my launch Slim unit's GPU is going out and found that Sony recently raised the price of their repairs on PS3's from $150 to $179 and now offers to offer a refurbished Slim model (with 90 day warranty) instead of repairing your fat unit.

Wow. I wonder if anyone's gonna screw up and get a non-BC Slim to replace their BC PS3.

At this point I'd just take a new Slim, no way I'd do refurbished. The BC on the 60 GB is great and all, but I've barely used it in the past year or so other than Persona 3, and I find that I like the way PS2 games look better on my 27" SDTV with component cables as opposed to my 52" 1080p TV.

I hate to take the bait, but that really is pretty crap honestly, no matter what your opinion of the platform is.

Sony Computer Entertainment secretly raised the price for servicing your Playstation 3 at the beginning of this week. Originally a $150 flat rate fee including shipping has gone up to $179. If you find the new price to fix your Playstation 3 outlandish, don't fret. Sony is pushing to have the launch consoles replaced with the new 120 gb Playstation 3 Slim. All you have to do is pay $120 and lose your backward compatible console for the new and improved PS3 Slim.
So, you can 'upgrade' to the newer slim model with a bigger hard drive cheaper than getting your old ugly fat system back? Sounds like win to me.

It's all how you look at it.

Nah, in alll seriousness I don't see the bad in this really. They're still giving you the OPTION right? So whats the harm in offering you an upgrade?

Yeah, it's the choice. Pay for your fat to be repaired for $179 or get a refurbished slim with a bigger HDD.

There are many sources, I just picked one. People have called Sony to confirm this as well.

Well, the fact that they upped the cost of the original repair that has been the same price for 2 years.

Many blogs, sites and forums reporting it, with your link as source. At least that's all I get when I google it.

Actually, that's a good point, and looking at the US PS3 forums there's nothing. A $30 price hike in the repair price this recent would surely have people bitching.

You aren't searching very well or you're looking at the wrong forums since here is the thread:

http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...ead.id=4213299

Again many people in the thread have confirmed it with Sony themselves and so have people over at GAF. You can too if you like 1-800-345-SONY. So the source here........... is Sony themselves.

Fair enough, I just looked at the recent threads from the past 24 hours. I can understand why they're doing it, though, parts for the older models are going to become harder and harder to come by now that they're out of production.

Or, go the route Gorvi did recently and get it fixed local. That is what I plan to do if mine goes belly up. (so far, no freezing since doing a factory reset )

You should clarify in your original post that the slim option is still $150.00 though. It's a bit misleading. I assume if you have a slim repaired it is still $150.00 too.

Is your slim not still under warranty? Or did you just miss it? I remember your Uncharted 2 thread that talked about the weird dots.

One one hand this is bullshit. They already charge too much.

On the other hand...I have a broken PS3 in my closet. I could sell it to get $50 or so, but for $180 I could get a slim PS3. That's not too shabby. For a second Blu-Ray player, anyway.

But on the other hand, for $120 more you can have a brand new system. They are actually charging more than half the price of the MSRP to fix a console? That's majorly fucked up.

I'm just going to pay $50 or so and get it repaired locally probably. I'd like to have a second PS3 around anyway, since it upscales DVDs so well. I'd hook up my Slim in my office with my 360.

For people that want to "upgrade" this is fine and dandy (if you call a refurbished slim an upgrade), but it comes at a ridiculous price.

My PS3 has software BC, so I guess I'd rather keep it than upgrade.

The whole repair policy sucks to begin with. $150 (or $180) for a refurbished unit with only a 90 day warranty? That's a joke. If something goes wrong again in 4 months you'd be stuck paying again, and by that point you could have just bought a new console.

Getting it repaired locally, you run the risk of Sony never touching your unit in the future because it has been "tampered with". Gorvi knew this risk but his save files were more important to him which is understandable.

I didn't mean to be misleading if I left that out.

My slim is under warranty since I have a year and after 3 different phone calls with Sony it seems that my unit will need to be repaired. Since my issue only happens on one game I'm trying to find other ways that maybe can resolve the issues over sending it in. Those purple dots only appear during gameplay of Uncharted 2 and the longer I play the more dots appear.

My brand new slim is almost 4 months old and needs repaired. So refurb or not you may be out a unit but then again you are paying for that 1 year warranty. It's a risk you take. I have a super launch unit, the second it came out so maybe the first batch were just shitty?

By this logic, the Slim should be $150 and not $180 to repair once the year warranties are up next August since they are still in production and parts are a dime a dozen for them.

Waaaay too fucking expensive for something that should work for a couple of years at least.

I can't imagine that's right on any front. And 90 days is a joke for that money.

I'll go around Sony with this if it happens. Fuck them (if true)

If you have the original 60 GB PS3 and it breaks down now it has worked for a couple of years.

Mine (bought in February 2007) still works fine and I hope it will never die on me. I imported it from the US, so it would not be cheap nor easy for me to get it fixed.
