The only reason I eventually upgraded from XP to Win 7 is for the DX10/DX11 support and because I wanted to be able to use all 8 gig of my RAM. Unless Windows 7 has any shortcomings along those lines that Windows 8 resolves then I have no reason at all to upgrade. Windows 7 has been pretty much flawless for me.

Thank you both for helping me in my ongoing effort to desensitize myself towards fingernail trauma. That's what I heard. But more recently (like last week) I heard that Oracle had given OpenOffice to Apache, so it might be/become the main one again.

As much as I hate paying for Office, it works better and easier in my opinion. I used OpenOffice and LibreOffice for years. But recently grabbed a copy of Office 2010 for my parents use and installed a copy on my laptop, it works so much better. Also opens a hell of a lot faster. Never mind the weird formatting issues I would get occasionally when opening one of my documents from OO or LO in Word. I just could not have that when I knew I would be sending out CVs.

Just as shitty. Try something as basic as having columns in a regular document. Not possible, you have to do a funky workaround involving tables that doesn't format well.

No, MS Office is really the best option out there. I've tried all the free/low-cost (Pages) versions out there and none comes close in terms of ease of use and functionality. There's a reason they are king in this area.

Also, you're good with people. Just go to the nearest college and ask a student to hook you up. I got the pimped out edition for $20. Same for both versions of windows 7.

I have never needed to use Microsoft office. As far as I know, Excel is just a dumb calculator.
