When Do You Want New Consoles?

This came up in the MS being too comfortable thread, but I figured it deserved it's own topic. And of course, a poll. So, when would you like to see the next generation of consoles come around? And why? This is excluding the Wii, of course, as the hardware is significantly less powerful than the PS3/360.

Personally, I don't want to see a new generation until 2012 at the earliest, though I think I can easily go longer. I was happy with my PS2 from when I bought it back in October of 2000 (that was 9 freakin' years ago!) until Fall 2007. With this generation I think I'll probably be happy with what we have for even longer.

I voted 2013. I'd be ok with late 2012, but think we would still be getting some awesome games. Course, my wallet doesn't want anything until 2014+.

I'd be happy with my current gen console being fixed permanently. Still waiting for it to come back from MS even though the "warranty status" was updated last weekend. =(

I put 2012 only because that's when I can reasonably see it happening without feeling like it's being rushed. I think I'd be happy with what we've got now for longer than that.

Well, I think I'll vote 2012. By Nov. 2012, the Xbox 360 will have been on the market for seven years. And the PS3 for six years. I don't expect new consoles to come any later than 2012, anyway. But honestly, I'd probably be fine with late 2011.

2011-2012 is good for me. I expect by then we'll see some insane PC graphics GPUs supporting 1080p 3D with super physics engines that we'll all want.

I also suspect this gen's games will be BC on the next gen consoles to act as a nice bridge.

I hope for 2014. I should have plenty of money by then. But 2011 isn't a good idea at the current prices and the current economy.

Speaking of prices, I'm expecting that the next Xbox and Playstation will both launch at $400. Maybe with a $300 Arcade-like model. Definitely no $600 PS4 next time around.

2012's fine by me, though I'm perfectly fine with it being later. There's no rush to get new systems to market.

I voted 2012 because we are all going to die that year and I want to see the next gen before we go. That is still not exactly the correct answer because I want Wii 2.0 next year. I figured out a loophole to not break my single next gen console rule. I sell the 360 to get Wii 2.0 and count it as this generation. Besides, we all know the next generation in gaming will not start until Sony says so.

My question: What are they going to offer us beyond shiny new graphics? Or more importantly, what do you need to be convinced to take the next step?

I put 2014+ because I'd like to see something beyond a minor incremental improvement in graphics (which realistically is all they could conceivably do) or some new stupid control scheme.

I'd be happy with 2015 or later. I don't care about graphics or new systems, keep the great games coming a la the immortal PS2.

If a new system releases in 2012 or so, it will have to be $299 at launch or I won't buy it. So that means I probably won't buy it. Plus, I don't buy systems at lauch since there is usually a dirth of games for months afterwards. The only reason I bought a 360 a few months after the launch was because of Oblivion.

I said 2011 because then they'll be cheaper by the time I'm actually done with this generation's games.

Later is better. I need to get my "for fun" fund rebuilt from the tattered mess it is now.

The more I think about it the more 2013 would work for me. Both kids will be in school so my wife will be working again. Man, with two incomes we'll feel like we're freaking rich.

I said 2011. I probably wouldn't buy a new console until early 2012 but since the consoles would most likely release late in the year they'd have to be released in 2011 for me to grab one in early 2012. Plus by having them out for a few months the launch craziness should have died down by then. Of course, all of that is based on the assumption the new systems will be 100% backwards compatible so that I can sell off my current systems to finance a new one. If that's not the case then I probably won't be in the market until much later.

I don't need a new system. Just keep making games for the current ones. Graphics and stuff don't need to get any better.

Agreed. The graphics are great where they are now and are only getting better. I'd rather not have to wait 6 years for a game just to see sweat coming out of a characters pores.
