Gamestop Really Wants You to Buy Modern Warfare 2 From Them

Do you plan on buying Modern Warfare 2? Do you plan on being done with the game in a month's time? Then boy, does Gamestop have a deal for you?

The game retail giant is offering a deal that amounts to a long term rental of the game. Consumers who pre-order the 360 or PS3 version online (sorry, it doesn't apply to in-store reservations) will get a e-mail coupon guaranteeing them $40 in store credit for the game if they trade it in before December 13. In effect, it's $20 for a roughly one month rental of the game. Is it a good deal? That's for you to decide.

Modern Warfare 2 will be released on November 10.

I always thought the legs on this series was its multiplayer which is the reason NOT to trade in a game...

That is a...ballsy move. Do you think there will be industry backlash? Infinity Ward has been pretty outspoken before.

This, this this. Quoted for emphasis. They have balls removing features and charging more for it.

Yeah it still pisses me off hearing about. If there is any industry backlash from Activision or Infinity Ward they can shove it, especially with the shit they are trying to pull.

I'll be getting a better deal, I'll rent on MW2 on console for 6.50, pass the single player and go back to playing Borderlands and Dragon Age.

At the end of their month with the game, if they still want it, they can keep it, or get the $40 guaranteed if they're ready to trade. But how much is this over what Gamestop would have normally offered? I guess it's better than not knowing what you'd get for the game.

I'm not a PC gamer, or someone who was ever interested in the game, but I couldn't agree more. PC gamers don't play PC games to get a console experience.

I'm happy enough buying it from Amazon and getting a $20 credit for another video game. There ain't no way I'll be trading this game in, at any point.

I don't play online, so I'll probably rent the game and beat it in an afternoon. These games are fun but SHORT as hell. Not worth it even for a $40 trade-in.

GS very rarely gives more than $32 for a trade-in without some other promotion tacked on.

EB up here typically has a promotion for some new releases where if you return it within the first week or two, you get the full credit back. Providing you pre-ordered of course. Usually it's for jank titles though.

Agreed. This IS a multiplayer focused game.

Not every game is both a singleplayer and multiplayer game nowadays. They can be both but it's not like it was 10, or maybe even 5, years ago, many are either one or the other.

Demigod, for example, got hit hard for its poor singleplayer. It didn't have any singleplayer. It's SP was a skirmish with bots, which any RTS has even into its online portion. Let's be fair though, it didn't try or make itself out to be anything except an online game. I doubt reviewers will be knocking points off Torchlight for its poor multiplayer experience.

Long story short, if you're playing it for singleplayer, rent it. It'll be good but short.

Don't do it guys, Gamestop hurts the industry, it prefers to sell used junk, and I'm sick and tired of their terrible cancellation policies. (I have to visit the store to show ID to cancel an online preorder? Really?) I'm also sick and tired of their overpriced "exclusive" editions. ACII special Gamestop edition is literally twice the Amazon regular price after discounts. Ridiculous.

So don't buy it. Simple as that. I still trade games to this so-called evil empire, because frankly, if I'm not playing the game, I get value out of turning it in and buying something else. Let's face it - they are the biggest game in town. You're welcome to say they're evil, hurt the industry, so on and so forth, but they satisfy a need/desire, and provide competition to other companies, that are starting to come up with their own plans for trade-ins and the like. So for all the evil they are, they also bring good, because now other companies want to throw down, and it's only promoting more of this.

This actually makes a lot of sense. It could draw a lot of business their way. If the person buying it trades it in, then gamestop can still turn that around for another profit. If they choose not to turn it in, then gamestop made the first sale anyway. It is a nice win-win preorder 'bonus' with no down side or overhead with games that they would have not had a bonus with otherwise.

I would not be surprised to see this more often with games that they are unable to get an exclusive bonus with.

Wait, what? WTF would want to "rent" MW2 for a month and give it back to Gamestop??

a) Is this competitive with Gamefly?
b) Who the hell only played CoD4 or WaW for "only a month"?

This is just a nauseating money grab. They want to profit off you, then hurry up and profit again selling it to some other poor sap for ooh... $54.99 instead of $59.99.

*hurls*
