Magicka, A New RPG For The XBLA and PC
What you see above is the debut trailer for Magicka, a new RPG from Swedish developer Arrowhead Games. Slated to hit Xbox Live Arcade and other digital distribution platforms some time in 2010, the game seems to approach the usual fantasy RPG tropes with a little bit of humor. It also features 4 person co-op play across all game modes, some nifty spell effects and what the developers describe as an "Innovative spellcasting system." |

Looks pretty interesting, the tongue in cheek manner they're approaching it definitely gets my interest. Plus, 4 person co-op is never a bad thing.

Hell, given that we're limited to Castle Crashers, Arkadian Heroes and the two Penny Arcade games when it comes to RPGs on XBLA, anything new would be nice. Plus funny is always welcome in RPGs.

Am I the only one that is tired of an innovative spell casting system? Just let me cast spells and let the stats determine if it hits. I'd rather have an innovative spell creation system.

![]() It's a shame that the industry as a whole is so enamoured with supposed innovation. Not to say that doing something new and unexpected is bad but a lot of the time we're so busy chasing the next new game tweak or funky mechanic that we can't stand still and appreciate the fundamentals. That wouldn't be a problem except when games which don't need to innovate are criticised for sticking to an older formula, which is infuriating when that older formula is perfectly fine.

The spell system makes me think of Crystal Chronicles.

Looks like fun. I've always wanted a good Diablo clone on XBLA, and Arkadian Warriors was not it.

I despise most "RPGs" that follow the Diablo formula (just because it's medieval doesn't mean it's an RPG!) but this looks awesome. I'm up for buying this if it turns out good...and we can get some guys together to play. I really don't multi-play much as I don't buy many games at launch--$60 is too high for most games for me, but for affordable (if it winds up being so) arcade games, I'm sold.

Looks interesting. I'll wait on reviews though, because Castle Crashers looked interesting and well...you know.

Castle Crashers was actually a good game provided you only ever played it local co-op and never got your saves corrupted.

Yeah, unfortunately it dropped at a time when me and most of my friends were all over the country due to university and work. We're mostly back in Huddersfield now though, so maybe it'd be worth getting together and giving it another shot.

That looks pretty interesting! I'm surprised it's coming to XBLA, as it looks like the kind of game that usually sees a digital-only release on the PC.
I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this one, and I might even end up picking up the XBLA version over the PC one if enough of my favorite COGers pick it up on that platform. |

I was actually turned off by the "Immerse Yourself in a Generic Fantasy World" line. Struck me a little too much as showing off your weaknesses. As many people said about Matt Hazard, being funny about the things that suck in your game doesn't make them not suck.
That said, the gameplay here actually looks like some really fun co-op. I was instantly reminded by the graphics and the action style of Nox, for anyone who remembers that game. I was a big fan of Nox, so that's a good thing in my book.

Nox was a fun game back in the day. A buddy of mine had it, and I always enjoyed playing it at his house.
