Busted iPhone

So I dropped by iPhone earlier today and the LCD screen decided to go 'Fuck you' in a very graphic way (White background with black lines). As a couple buddies of mine were at work attempting to play ER with the thing, the front screen also go cracked as we were attempting to pry the thing out (Suction cup, I know).

Took it to an extended lunch to go to a local guy to see how much he'd charge to fix it. $250. Out rageous when I could buy the parts for $120 online. He knew this and knew that I knew, so after the stand off I asked him how much it'd be for the parts so that I could do the 'labor'. $230. Said to him to have a good day and walked out. Ordered the parts about 4 hours ago, and I am still at work absolutely bored out of my mind. I needs my entertainment.

By the way, I did call Apple and they said that due to it being 'accidental' it would probably cost over $300. I hope those people ship the Display assembly quickly.

Man, I love tinkering type projects like that. I just got me a new screw driver kit for all those odd screws. It's so awesome.

I got mines from Fry's for $17 but Amazon has it for $11.50.

I needed something to get at some tiny screws cause I was fixing my brothers cell phone. He broke the LCD. I preform surgery, and just hugged my kit. I just wish I had more tinkerish type things to work on. :/

Ask your friends for some old broken iPods. I've got like, 10 broken 30GBs in my house that I've taken apart and fiddled with (I've also assembled one or two from spare parts from the others!), and it's a blast. I don't know what level stuff you want to tinker on, but that was great fun for me. Also: crack open a hard drive sometime. Not only are they really cool to take apart, there are a ton of things you can do with the parts inside of them. I made a laser oscilloscope with one a while ago (let me try to find a video of something similar), and I've heard the magnets inside of them can be a blast to work with as well.

This is pretty similar to what I did last year. I wanted to make one using an iPod HDD over the summer, but never got around to it. But a $10 green laser and a weekend of fiddling with a HDD will give you something really cool that is fun to show off to friends.

I've done several ipod upgrades and repairs. Those are fun.

So the repair is now complete. The screen is fantastic and is Working quite well. The only issue is that, characteristically, I've lost the screws to the bottom of the iPhone. Doh!
