Interested in Joining the CoG Team?

In an effort to expand our news and features reporting, we're looking to bring a few more people onto the site as staff.

To be straight up front: this isn't a paying gig. We're getting more review materials in as time goes on, and we try to spread those around to the staff, but I can't promise any particular product to someone. We do get some invitations to industry events, and those we also try to spread around to the staff when possible. As the site gets more popular, and ad revenues increase we hope to be able to compensate staff more, but I can't make any promises.

As for responsibilities, it would mostly be writing news stories for the front page. If you're interested in doing a features or reviews, that's good too, but more than anything we need folks to help out with news posting.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM.

Hey, hey, hey... it's really refreshing to see that stated flat-out. For comparison, I was once hired on at one of the IGN/Gamespy sites. When I asked about compensation, the jackass in charge decided the best answer was to ignore the question and cease all contact with me. After waiting a while, I took that as a "no."

While that sounds great to me, it also seems like there is a need for more moderation on the actual forum side of this site. Far too many threads end up in pissing matches between the same handful of people and the actual discussion ends up lost amongst the banter.

COG has a great thing going right now, it would be a pity to scare people off because of a few overzealous posters trying to nail their opinions home without opening their ears to an actual debate.

We purposefully try to use a very light touch moderating the forums. We do a fair amount of it, but very often in PMs to keep things private. I know what you're saying, but we are trying to curb just what you're talking about, but without closing threads or other more obtrusive actions.

As a moderator on a large high-traffic forum, I can vouch that a light touch is better than overzealous moderation as you end up with a lot of hurt feelings and crying afoul of censorship when stuff gets trashed willy-nilly.

Except for spammers. They can go to hell and they can die.

I get exactly what you and the good doctor are saying, but when you read a thread and every 3rd post is just stirring the pot or an insult to another person, it sort of becomes a "why is this still going on in the first place" type of question rather than me having to report what the problem is.

Overall I'd say the mods do a fantastic job at keeping things civil and respectful around here, but there could be a bit of a tightening of the leash before things get out of hand.

If only everyone else here shared our dapperness I wouldn't have to express my thoughts.

God, I love that hippo pic.

I'll shot you off a PM, Dr. I'm something of an amateur writer, and would love to get my feet wet doing something like this.

I threw my hat in the ring for news contribution. I'd love to do features as well though.

I think I'd be useful as I keep a late night schedule and would love to bring my areas of interest along for some non-electronic gaming features and news to the site as well.

Here's to hoping!

Well, yes, but I could add nothing! No time, few skills.

Or do we need a theme song? in which case I recommend a round of submissions and one or more Serapth backed polls, tourney style, to select which. I would participate in such a contest.

Not sure if anything I'd be able to produce would be up to snuff, but I guess if you ever need some sort of grunt work done I'd be happy to throw my hat in.

Normally I'd LOVE to sign up, but with the baby and everything I'd probably be a lame news editor. And work. Fuck, I hate my job. I'm here 6:30-5pm T-F, so that eliminates a lot of time for posting news.
