Eurogamer reviews LBP

Eurogamer review:

Quote:
The promise that anyone could create something simple and fun and personal with LittleBigPlanet hasn't come true. In a way, it's the opposite of Spore, which makes it easy and fun for every single player to have creative input, but doesn't let any of them change the fabric of the game. LittleBigPlanet lets them run wild, with unprecedented results, but it locks the majority out of the creative process, because it's time-consuming and simply not very enjoyable.

LBP is also the latest in a long line of games where we've enjoyed slapping each other off buildings. More of this, please.
We hoped it could do both those things. That it doesn't isn't the let-down it might have been, thanks to the untamed community of brilliant nutjobs that's already out there, appending their DIY masterpieces to this beautiful, mildly flawed, magnificently multiplayer platform game. We salute them, we salute Media Molecule for making it possible for them, and we salute Sony for its total commitment to this brave, hare-brained project.

But mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.
Score: 9/10

Awesome score. I went into the GAF forums and people are complaining about the low score. Hilarious!

Yeah, just read the whole thing, sounds fun.

The comment section is full of retards. Calling it shit because it's a 9 or geting angry because a 9 isn't good enough. The internet should be illegal for 13 year olds

That's another of the advantages of the ten-point score system: Most readers will not understand how limited the reviewers options were and more controversy will ensue.

One of the major Swedish newspapers has an article about LBP, saying that Nintendo and MS don't have anything like it, and they gave 5 out of 5. I saw someone reading it on the subway.

I think you mean disadvantages. I subscribe to Michael "Zonk" Zenke's idea about review scales. Most places have them just to stir up links and controversy. When he removed, and then added scores, he saw the differences in link traffic. But any scale that seeks to illustrate something beyond a game being good, bad, broken, is doomed to fail. I also agree with him that the 5 point scale is a much better one to use as people are much more familiar with it online(Netflix, Amazon.com, New Egg) for ratings. If you see a 5 star product with a hundred ratings on NewEgg, chances are it is a quality product.

A friend and I were discussing just that yesterday; what, if anything, will MS do to counter LBP, if it turns out to be the hit that Sony are expecting it to be? Will they go the plagiarism route?

They gave it that score but the actual article is not a review, which is kinda odd if you ask me. Not that I expect more from them...

I didn't see that. I didn't want to read too much over the persons shoulder. But you're right it isn't that surprising. Nonetheless I imagine that for this sort of thing it's more influential both online and otherwise than other papers.

Nintendo doesn't have anything like it? Maybe not with user created content, but they mght have a few good platformers...

Anyway, I think MS is going slightly different with Viva Pintata and Banjo-Kazooie (which has its own create-and-share system).

It does? In what way? I thought it just had a similar system to Halo 3.

Banjo looks very much like LBP in that dep. And VP2 and Halo 3 also had elements. Content creation and sharing isn't new.

Hmm, this doesn't bode well for my buying the game. The content creation was what was drawing me to it the most, but if it's as difficult to get into as they seem to indicate then I just don't have time for it.

Ignoring reviews as I normally do. I will be getting this purely on my own thoughts of it. And those are that it will be a damn fun time.

I assume you meant my comment? I don't want to derail the thread or anything (LittleBigPlanet would be a definate purchase for me if I had a PS3, by the way), but Banjo has a way to share your vehicles and blueprints or whatever. More will be shown as it gets closer to release, I'm sure.
