Valve: L4D DLC Still Coming

Despite having a sequel in development, Valve have stated in an interview with CVG that they intend [to] fully support the original game with downloadable content as well as added functionality (such as the upcoming team-matchmaking update)
Quote:
"We plan to keep supporting Left 4 Dead 1," Valve marketing VP Doug Lombardi recently told CVG. "I think folks took our [E3] announcement [of Left 4 Dead 2] as a sign that we were dropping Left 4 Dead 1 and that's just not the case."

Lombardi noted that "there will be some announcements coming before summer's out about what's coming there," explaining that the internet's vocal opposition to Left 4 Dead 2 and the subsequent boycott "really didn't change our plans at all."

Despite that backlash and 37,335-member strong boycott against Left 4 Dead 2, Lombardi informed Eurogamer that "pre-orders are currently double what they were for Left 4 Dead 1 at this point in time away from launch."

You still mad at me, hon?

I wish they'd announce what the DLC is already instead of just issuing vague assurances.

I just don't like the idea of boss zombies (tanks are bad enough). Just about every other zombie game ends up with bosses, why it can't it just be left as "you and your allies vs the horde"?

They said in the interview that the concrete announcements will be made later this Summer. So I guess it's pretty soon?

Remember when Nintendo said they would support the GBA when the DS came out?

Didn't even realize pre-orders were open for L4D 2. I guess I'll have to go ahead and give Valve my money right away.

I love how Lombardi rubs it in all of the angry Internet masses' faces that L4D2 is already set to become more successful than L4D1. I bet everyone at Valve is snickering at his subtle jab.

Well done, Mr. Lombardi.

More so than maybe any other publisher, Valve knows gamers...which extends to knowing empty threats and and forum trolls when they see them.

Not at all what I meant...if you think they are releasing it too early vote with your wallet. L4D isn't going to magically stop working on the release day of L4D2.

I'm talking about the people threatening to "never buy another Valve game again" or people that still think game-related internet petitions are worth the HTML they are coded on.

God! NO! Pick one or the other, and fully support IT.
If L4D2 really has such significant improvements that it has to be a new game, to split the player base, then keep working to support it, and don't waste anymore time on L4D.

Make one of them the best it can be, don't make two pretty good products.

I hope L4D2 sells worse than L4D1, but I doubt that will happen.

I'd be surprised if L4D1 content kept coming out after L4D2 hits. I guess we'll see one quick content pack announced soon, then all of the efforts focused on L4D2. I'm confused as to who preorders games 3 months early.

I really wish they would allow you to port over the L4D1 maps so we could treat this like a Rock Band 2 situation. That way we could play all the old and new maps, and get the new L4D1 content.

Edit: I also wish they'd wait a year before they release L4D2. With the content on L4D1, and L4D2 coming out later this year, they will just weaken both games communities. I'd say let L4D1's DLC play itself out before L4D2 is released.

This is why Bungie releases a new Halo every three years. By then the community is ready for a new game, and the DLC has ran it's course. I guess Bungie wants to take a more Activision/EA appraoch and do a yearly update and let the old game and maps be overshadowed by the new game.

I'm confused how a great game getting a sequel a year later is suddenly a huge issue NOW when it's not exactly the first time it's happened.

I suppose it has to do with the timing of the whole thing. Valve hadn't even announced any of the promised new content for L4D, and they announce a sequel. It's just that Valve had never down this before, and I think everyone was expecting Valve to support L4D1 for a long time like their older games.

It's not that it's unusual for the gaming industry. It's just odd for Valve to do it.

I think most gamers wanted L4D1's content to be released first and get some signifigant play time before we get a new game.

It's not like a sequel is an evil thing, but it's not needed so soon either. I say give L4D2 more developement time, and release it next year.

L4D1 wasn't really a "Valve" game though - it was another dev (Turtle Rock, I think) that they bought out and published. It wasn't made the "Valve" way and I think that's a big part of why they need a sequel to do the things they wanted to do. They'd have to kludge together code to make the original game's engine do the things they want, and that's not really the Valve way of doing it.

I don't get gamers sometimes though. Valve takes years to make Half-Life 2 and people bitch. They take years to make Team Fortress 2 and people bitch. They put out Left 4 Dead 2 in a year and...people bitch.
