Kirk Cameron's Darwin Day Celebration

Spreading the love of Jesus through deception.

As some of you know, Cameron recently issued this dispatch from his video blog lair announcing his plot to subvert “Darwin Day,” a event marking the 150th anniversary of the publishing of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species.”

The former “Growing Pains” star-turned-evangelical Christian will send Darwin Day into chaos by passing out 50,000 copies of Darwin’s book to students at universities around the country. Only Cameron’s special copies will be altered to include the teachings of the gospel instead of just evolution. Muah-ha-ha-ha! Minds will be blown! The system will fall!

Oh I'm aware of him, what I was saying is more like "Really? This is your plan?"

Student: "Hey, free Darwin book!"
Kirk: "Teehee, just you wait! TEEHEE!"

On the whole, I don't have a problem with him. He can tell anybody he wants to about his faith, but what seems weird that he has to trick people into it like this. Be straightforward about it and people might take you seriously.

Did he alter the whole thing or just write a horrible foreword? I originally heard it was the latter, in which case people should gather them up, tear out the foreword, and pass them out as planned.

He (and by 'he' I mean the group he's working with) took out some of the most important chapters and inserted some creationist stuff into the book.

People should hand out bibles at church groups but replace Genesis with chapters from Origin of Species.

Source? The linked video from Kirk's blog made it sound like they were just adding the foreword and leaving the rest of the book intact.

I can't find the link, but I remember the article said that a couple chapters dealing with geographic specialism - the reason creatures separated by vast stretches of ocean evolve differently - were omitted. In fact I think the amount of material removed is the same as the 50 pages added, since the page counts are the same.

And sure, Kirk isn't going to mention the omissions, because that would kill his point.

That's a good point. I don't know who holds the copyright for Darwin's book. Wonder if they'd take action.

Honestly, he'd have a better and more significant impact by simply handing out the Bible. Seriously. Give people choices, not deceive them. Sharing the word of God isn't about tricking people, its about being direct with your faith and being upfront about your intentions.

I'm Non-Denom Christian and I'm not the BEST Christian you'll find, but I've got my faith and my beliefs. And this, to me, is just underhanded and wrong. If anything, he's going to accomplish the opposite of what he set out to do.

I will say, if it was someone subverting it for purely humor reasons, we'd probably all be chuckling amongst ourselves, instead of chastising someone for trying to do something religious.

I thought about that, and tried to find out, but I couldn't find any reference stating that. The only thing I could find is that the book is still for sale at Amazon and other usual outlets, leading me to believe that it may not be public domain.
