It's not the spook thing that gets me.

It's the bottom-left screenshot that makes me say "Oh, early animation. Why so racist?"

I don't understand what's going on in the bottom left. It looks like a bunch of chipmunks with beehive haircuts.

I'm not seeing blackface in that image. Not at all.

While I am actually aware of the origin of the word I've always thought it was a way of describing someone who acted as if they're better than those that they keep company with.

It disturbs me how thin skinned society has become. We've amassed a list of once innocent words that we can no longer use in fear that someone will be offended by what we say. As a white male I cannot insult a black female without running the risk of being thought of as a racist sexist asshole. Perhaps I'm neither racist nor sexist... Perhaps I'm just an asshole. Did you ever stop and think about that?

Another word that has different connotations to some people is "ignorant". As in, lack of knowledge of a certain subject.

A good friend of mine, a teacher, wanted to show his students how some words had taken on new meaning over time. He had no idea how much trouble he would get into when he said, "We are all ignorant about many things. I am ignorant about rocket science. You are ignorant about where I was raised", etc. He had a mother come in the next day and get right in his face, asking who the fuck he thought he was to call her child ignorant. He was ignorant of the fact that the word is used strictly as an insult in some circles.

Still doesn't make the word itself bad. "Willful ignorance" is an insult, because it refers to someone who, when presented with facts, rejects them.

Maybe the bitch shouldn't have been ignorant about the words actual meaning. She just thought it was an insult because she hears it all the time. Because she doesn't know anything. Because she's stupid.

I started thinking, and I think whenever I've heard "uppity" used, it's not in the context of race or snobbery. I've heard it used to describe someone who overreacts over little situations. Becoming frustrated and angry disproportionate to the scale of the event that causes anger.

For example: "That bitch in front of me had 13 items instead of 12! I counted them! Don't they know any better? THIS is the express lane!" "Calm down, don't be so uppity. Who gives a shit?"

Yeah, that's exactly how I've come to use it ( and how I used it to start off the whole conversation in the first place.
