Activison Making Walking Dead FPS
Activision has selected Terminal Reality (Kinect Star Wars; Ghostbusters) to develop a new first person shooter based on The Walking Dead. The new FPS will not be connected to nor impact the Walking Dead adventure games currently being made by Telltale. The FPS will instead be based firmly in the backstory of the TV show. You play as Daryl Dixon, everyone's favorite crossbow-toting, philosophy-spouting redneck. Daryl will be accompanied by his even more redneck brother Merle as the two try to make their way to the supposed safe haven of Atlanta during the early days of the Zombie outbreak. The game will focus extensively on stealth and resource rationing. Anything can betray your presence to the zombies, so you'll have to work to avoid detection. Interaction with NPC will also be important; they can harm you, help you and even join up with you depending on your choices. So...this isn't quite what I was expecting. Reading between the lines of the press release, it sounds like Telltale has the rights to develop games based on the comics, and Activision has the rights to develop based on the TV show. Split licenses like this aren't unheard of - Sierra cranked out a couple of games based on Lord of the Rings books while the Peter Jackson adaptations were in theaters and in game stores - but they're rare. Making Daryl the star is, at first blush, a smart move. He's arguably the most popular character on the show, and that recognition will help sales. But by pairing him with his repugnantly racist brother Merle poses issues. It's also a prequel to the series, so we know that both Daryl and Merle have to survive to make it to the camp seen in the series, so the narrative will be constrained in a way that the Telltale game isn't. Look for Activision's The Walking Dead in 2013 on the 360, PS3 and PC. |

Well gee-whiz, with Terminal Reality at the helm I'm sure that it won't be half-assed!

They did make Ghostbusters which supplied enough fan service to make it a must play. Lightning may strike twice.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Activision dropped Ghostbusters. Why on earth would TR go back to a publisher that fucked them off in the past?

Meh. Telltale is doing great for me with the games interpreting the comics.

I'd actually like to see a survival horror that starts out just before the outbreak starts and takes you right through the fall of civilization. Sort of "The Stand" in video game format I guess. Maybe have it be at full zombie coverage at 2/3 through the game. I think that would be a good take on the subject but they'd actually have to hire an actual writer to make the story so I'm sure it'll never happen.

I think the Condemned games are a good indicator of how to make a FPS that's creepy and has great melee combat. I think it would work well for a zombie game.
