It's just an epic fail of a slide. What would really seal the deal was if he was tagged out after sliding all the way over the bag.

edit: Sliding in baseball sucks. I've known tons of people, including myself, that have been injured in sliding accidents. If that guy had hit just a little differently his neck could have been in bad shape.

It's still a funny slow-mo fail though. Especially coming from a pro.

Yeah, I'm going to say that you need to "get" baseball to laugh at that one. I just felt like I was missing the joke too. Speaking laymanly: Isn't this what all slides look like? Did he forget to lift his pinky finger like a silly baseball noob and that's why it's funny?

Well, he doesn't really commit to the slide, and he tries to put his hands down to soften the impact, but they just fold underneath him and fuck everything up. The whole idea of sliding head-first is to extend your hands out to reach the bag, so you have to keep your head up and hands out to grab the bag and stop yourself.

edit: upon watching that gif a few more times, it also looks like he might have tripped, or at least stumbled when starting the slide. That would explain why it looks more like he's trying to break a fall than slide.

You're also supposed to slide past the side of the bag, he's sliding right into it and then over it. With his hands folded behind him, he is in no way able to grab the bag, which would more times than not, lead to him being tagged out. It was just a horrible attempt at something they do many times a day. The only thing worse would be if he starting sliding too early and stopped before getting to the bag. This happened in a movie, but I forget which one it was. I was say....Major League?

I did that once in high school, except it was a foot first slide. I stopped a good six inches away, but was able to scoot forward to touch it before getting tagged. Still felt stupid as hell. Coach wasn't exactly impressed either.
