I don't see what sales numbers have to do with my opinion of the direction the series has taken. I wasn't predicting doom, just expressing frustration that a series that has experimented so much in the past has been on a very static trend lately.

I agree with you, ink. Some of the newer Mario games are kind of going through the motions. But I feel NSMB2 is a positive step, as the score-chasing format represents some change to the standard formula. And Super Mario 3D land wasn't especially new, but it incorporated some nifty platforming mechanics.

Serious question: Why, given the capacity for touch screen controls, haven't we seen a new Mario Paint game, or at least a port on the 3DS?

It came out, reviewed well, and sold well. What else could happen?

The previous four Mario's were SMG, NSMBW, SMG2 & SML3D. It's the idea of Mario that's getting old, not the games.

Mario was "getting old" back on the gamecube, if I recall correctly. I foresee many more games yet.

You said that the series needed a breath of life when, statistically speaking, it has as much life as it ever has had. If you had left it at "I don't like the art direction" then you're welcome to that opinion, but the series isn't stale. New Super Mario Bros. on the DS was a big freaking deal since it was the first new 2D Mario that had been released in 15 years, 11 if you include Yoshi's Island.

Depends on how you define "breath of life," but I don't feel like arguing semantics. You know what point I was making now.

Got this one from the eShop, and it's very, very good. Feels a lot more like a sequel to Super Mario World, than it does to NSMB.

Also, I upgraded my 3DS to the XL. It's like a brand new system. Incredible change to the 3D now that the screen is as wide as my eyes as far apart. No more cramped hands. And the sound over headphones is also much improved.

I'm going to replay my library.

I think it's more of a spiritual successor to SMB3 than even 3D land was (and believe me, I felt a lot of SMB 3 influence in 3D Land). I like this game a lot, and I'm working on earning enough star coins to open up that Star World. Got about 50 now.

Also, glad you like the XL, man. I am thoroughly pleased with mine, and I honestly think it's Nintendo's best ever handheld system in terms of quality - the build is nice, the materials are excellent, and the LCDs are the best I've seen short of the Vita. The speakers are a bit soft, but they sound clear.... I am a headphone gamer anyway!

I agree - after the oddball Sunshine, Mario deflated. But I also disagree about the motions: each game since has taken Mario somewhere new, with Galaxy being the prime example. However I tire of the idea of Italian plumbers, princesses and mushroom jumping, the games remain fresh.

Got it and my son loves it.

My 3DS has pretty much become his now.

I've been playing New Super Mario Bros. 2 for a week or so now and find it to be a ton of fun, if not a bit "been there, done that". For anyone who hasn't picked it up yet, I'll sum up the game play for you in two words: Golden Showers.
