It's not unfair or "Waaaaah! Too hard!" It's just more challenging than past Zelda games. This definitely feels like a more sophisticated game. Kids seeking an easy fun time need not apply.

I killed two of them bitches yesterday. Damn did I feel accomplished.

Death does come quickly and easily, but it also checkpoints very generously and reloads saves without any hassle, so thus far I haven't been too upset by any of my several deaths.

I also really like how flexible the game is in allowing you to creatively tackle combat situations. Dropping metal crates on difficult enemies to one-shot them or knocking them off the side of a cliff rather than risking breaking a melee weapon is super satisfying, and I had an ice wizzrobe just absolutely ruining my day trying to climb a tower until I managed to sneak up to a nearby high point and just take him out with a single fire arrow, at which point climbing the tower was trivial and I picked up the ice wand in my lazy, casual approach.

Also, I absolutely LOVE how you can climb everything. Finally someone fixed my biggest pet peeve in gaming; not being able to traverse moderately steep inclines! I hate having to run around mountains trying to find the right path. Now I can just climb up the fuckers.

Yeah, and this game rewards for Skyrim-ing up the side of a mountain more than almost any other open world game.

I like finding little mechanics in this game, like shooting animals with fire arrows causes the meat to drop already cooked. And while rain is annoying for climbing, I'm pretty sure shield surfing on grass in the rain is faster (hold block, jump, press A).

Also, out of fire arrows? You can light a normal arrow on fire if there's a source nearby (it will go out pretty fast though).

The laser guards? Strike and hide, strike and hide. There were two at the base of a tower I wanted to go up so I decided it was time for them to die.

Mostly happens when you'd try to make elixirs.

Yeah, if you put in stuff that doesn't make a valid recipe, you'll get "Dubious Food". It won't hurt you, but it only gives one heart so it can be a bad waste of good ingredients.

Pro tip: use all those apples and random meats to make meat skewers and sell 'em for 30 to 70 rupees apiece. Got myself a sweet new ninja outfit that way tonight.

You can also sell ores for way more money apiece, but I'm told those are important for late game crafting so I'm saving mine for now.

I just ran into a very frustrating moment. I finished a tough battle against multiple blue and green Bokoblins and a blue Moblin, during which I lost two good weapons and used up the 3 fairies I had. It was part of a quest. Afterward I gathered up some treasures and then ran up a nearby hill. A few minutes later one of those skeletal lizards jumped out of the grass and killed me in one shot. The game spawned me right in the middle of the monster camp, with all of the monsters respawned and the quest progress erased. Yet my inventory was exactly as it was when I died, meaning no fairies and those weapons were gone. Of course the monsters attacked me immediately. After dying twice I quit in frustration. I mean what the heck? Everything should have been rolled back or nothing, not a mishmash that left me screwed.

I guess I'll try going back to an earlier save tomorrow. :/

One strat I read says you can stun them by shooting them in the eye, then wail on em baby!

But make sure you have stronger weapons than the weak sauce weapons you get on the starter plateau.

This video summarizes a lot of things that I've enjoyed about BOTW, and how surprising it is for a Zelda game:

If it makes you feel any better, I used to get wrecked by Guardians too. I spent yesterday evening hunting them for materials. I definitely feel like my ability to deal with things is progressing in a natural way.

Also, my Link, in spoilers below!

It's ok, I'm not mad with the difficulty or anything. It actually feels natural, since they're trying to make it feel like an unarmed unprepared person is entering a world with no knowledge of this dangerous world. You have to gain skill stamina and health like you would in Far Cry or Skyrim. I'm sure I'll feel completely badass once I can take those stone laser turret bastards down.

Now a game that was completely unbalanced was Far Cry 4. Good grief that game was just brutal early on. Also, Crysis 1 can eat all the dicks. Fuckin tank level... *grumbles angrily*
