Yeah it doesn't really make sense. I love Krysten Ritter, and she was hilarious in "Don't Trust the B in Apt 23", but she's not exactly a household name either.

Well hey, for once you can't give me grief about something I haven't experienced.

He plays the one gay guy on the show. You know the one.

I personally liked the action, but the story looks sorta meh. I'm more looking forward to the Luke Cage/Iron Fist friendship. It's always been a fun parring in the comics and is really where the character shines. He's just sorta Generic Karate Man without the connection to the 1970's, blacksploitation films and the Kung Fu obsession.

They should have made him gay on this show too. That would have been far more interesting IMHO.

Wait, I'm pretty sure there was more than one gay dude on that show... Unless Renly identified as bisexual. Or pan.

They didn't cast an asian because it was never the plan. Nobody promised it.

'Hey I am making chicken soup'
'why does my chicken soup has chicken in it?'

As far as I know, there has never been the 'Asians are not big enough for this show.'

It seems people are angry because something no one said will happen did not happen. It is not that people are protesting appropriation, which is an understandable, people are fabricating reasons to get upset.

I mean if you want to be upset, you should be angry at the 13 hours you lost over Jessica Jones.

I'm not even sure what this is about ironfist was a white guy in the comics.

gonna put this under don't care and I'm usually the first one saying why the fuck are they casting some white person(avatar last air bender etc.)

Yeah this, I'm all for inclusion but now we have a demand for asian washing a white dude. He always was white.

Heck, casting a Chinese as yet another kung fu guy seems just as wrong.

It's not that Netflix shows aren't big on inclusion (Luke Cage was basically all about that), so I don't see a problem unless you go looking for it.

That others see a problem without "going looking for it" does not invalidate their concerns.

I mean, maybe their beef ALSO exists with the original iteration of the character being white, because an Asian protagonist would have been untenable at the time of the comic's creation. Just throwing it out there.

True, I get that, just typecasting an asian into yet another kung fu stereotype seems just as bad. I'm not sure there's a winning move here. Maybe Jones should have been Asian rather then Iron. At least her race didn't matter much content wise and would have felt less like obvious.

I get representation is important, just this just seems the exact wrong role to put it in for stereotypical reasons.

I dunno, I think there's probably a way to strike a balance between them doing something traditionally Chinese like kung fu and representing the modernity of the culture as well.

Problem is they cast an Asian guy and you get loads of "but he's white in the comics" and "oh sure, an Asian guy that knows Kung fu, how original".

Personally I stick in the same category as black Johnny storm in the Fantastic four remake, as long as it doesn't effect the character adversely I couldn't care what race or colour they are.

I mean if we're harping on originality of tropes a white guy doing martial arts better than everyone is also pretty established. David Carradine, Ralph Macchio... hell, daredevil was on some ninja shit. I think for some it's becoming an issue of institutionalized whitewashing rather than this specific instance. I can name WAY more white male leads doing martial arts well than Asian ones in Hollywood cinema.

Fair enough. I saw a lot of outrage when this casting choice was announced online, so I assumed it was yet another example of Hollywood whitewashing. That's what I get for assuming. I'm not familiar with the Iron Fist character at all, but the trailer made it seem very cliched.

Next time I will do my homework before posting.

Oh there's tropes a plenty for that too.

Point is it'll get criticised either way.

I honestly only care if the shows good.
