While this is speculation, it makes sense that Nintendo would be the one to launch early, this time around. The big questions would be how many of their casual adopters would be ready to buy a new, upgraded Wii by 2010/2011. The trade in deal could help with that...

Dude.... a high def Wii with an improved controller and blu-ray drive? I'd be all over it. Knowing Nintendo, the price would be reasonable as well. With an upgrade so soon, I'd have to think that backward compatibility would be in. I'm not sure I'd bite without that.

A $250 console every 4 years... it could work.

I'd buy it, especially if it upscaled older games like some of that emulation stuff does.

I guess my main concern would be if I traded in my old Wii, what would happen to all my VC titles?

So, if it really does release in 2010 does it count as a next gen console if the other two do not release until 2012? I made myself a promise to be a single console owner next gen. This could ruin those plans.

Or it could be a brilliant loophole.

Are you thinking blu-ray and 1080p capability will be too big a jump technologically to maintain the affordability / simplicity of the system?

Yes. Nintendo doesn't like to lose money on hardware, and Sony fought tooth and nail to get out a system with 1080p (sometimes!) and Blu-ray for $300... even though they own the format themselves. I don't think it's a priority for Nintendo this generation. Hell, I think they'll still go with DVD-9 in the next generation.

Plus, a trade-up program will not happen, period. If so, they'd have done so with the GB to GBC to GBA to GBA SP, or DS to DS Lite to DSi to DSI XL.

I see it this way, I was amazed with all the zip bam pow features of the first Wii, then I ran out and bought one!!!

Now it sits... I will not make that mistake again as I'm still waiting for the games that make me want to buy them (I own boom blox and mario kart).

And having a Wii as my BR player? That just does not sit right with me

I too will be interested to see how they would do this.
The blu-ray drive would be easy as pie to do. But the hardware to 1080p...unless its some kind of upconversion.

I still think that MS had a great great idea by putting ram directly on the videocard in the 360. If its ATI doing the Wii2 I could see them doing that so that they can pull some wizardry. Really is an excellent idea.

I'd buy one that supported HD...maybe.

I still think it's way too early to release new hardware, but we all know Nintendo. If it's not new colors released it's new versions. The DSi just came out and they've already announced a new one for cryin' out loud.

I hate that about Nintendo (among other things).

I'm afraid the mad rush to be FIRST will fuck us all. MS sees their success because they released first and will try it again. Sony knows this and might try to beat them. Someday we'll have 1 year console cycles because they'll all be trying to beat each other.

I don't see a Wii 2.0 in the same light as the other two companies' next releases, since it seems more like a minor update than a real successor to the Wii. So even if it released before the other two guys, I wouldn't consider it "first" in the next-gen launches.

This. I own a ton of VC and WiiWare, almost more than I own proper Wii games.

Strike that. Definitely more than I own proper Wii games.

If I can keep that stuff, I'll probably be game for an upgrade - I was an early adopter of the Wii in late 2006, I feel like I've had 3 good years with it, by next year I'll be ready for another step up, assuming backwards compatibility with existing Wii software and my VC / WiiWare. (Gamecube would also be nice, but negotiable I guess.)

But no VC / WiiWare carryover, no deal.

I am perfectly content with a Brawl with good online. I like Brawl.

The specs would be interesting, but I've seen far more ridiculous lies presented as leaks before.

Like most others, I'm really skeptical. Nintendo is far better than the other two hardware makers at keeping their secrets. Far better. No one knew anything about their E3 presentation. This was not an anomaly; this is their track record.

The one thing this rumor has going for it, though, is that it was purportedly leaked by Nintendo France. It's invariably someone at Nintendo of Europe or Nintendo's official magazine in Europe that does give away leaks on the rare occasion it happens.

I've got a truck full of VC and WiiWare titles I'm not ever going to part with. Not to mention the Wii my emulator for everything from the GameBoy to N64. I love playing Kung Fu and Vigilante one minute and then Beetle Adventure Racing and Ogre Battle 64 with a Wavebird or Classic Controller on a 55" screen.

I'm interested in what happens next. As others have said, games like Smash Bros are enough to make me buy whatever comes out next, but I'm never going to disconnect my Wii.

For those who doubt the likelihood of Nintendo's trade-in program, I think it's brilliant and the only way to make sure grandparents and Oprah's crowd graduates to the successor. Actually, it's too brilliant. Nintendo won't do it.

They can keep a game secret, or a hardware upgrade. A new platform is different, though - they need to tell third-party developers about it. So the claim that they plan to wait until a month before launch to announce it strikes me as yet another unlikely detail.
