I'm playing the open beta. I really like the combat, it feels like it's got a ton of depth. But the single player is gonna have to kick all kinds of ass if I'm going to consider this at full price. As of now, I'm waiting for a sale.

Edit: My opinion of this game is rising more and more as I learn the combat system's intricacies. As a fan of stuff like Bushido Blade, Chivalry, Jedi Knight 2, and Blade Symphony, For Honor is right up my alley. The chances of this being a day 1 purchase are rising.

Beta closes at 8 PM EST. Anybody wanna tag up in a couple of hours? My uplay tag is roflmcwaffles.

edit: That ended sooner than they announced. Ah well.

I preordered it. I fucked around and had decent fun during 2 of the alphas, and during this beta I actually sat down and learned combos and advanced techs, which made it an absolute blast. Even the bots provide some intense moments, so I think the campaign should be good. They also confirmed co-op for it.

Like you said, it reminds me of the good old days of playing Bushido Blade 1/2, Jedi Academy, and even Soul Calibur to a degree.

Fuck it, I preordered too. I spent about an hour in duel training this morning and put some reps in before getting into 1v1 games. Knowing the advanced moves really made the difference for me, especially with Orochi. I can already tell I'm gonna use him a lot.

Yeah, its amazing how much you can punish and how aggressive you can become when you know a few guard breaks and combos. Plus it breaks up the monotony of turtling and poking when you can throw a headbutt or two into the mix.

I've played through a couple story missions and a couple online duels, and so far I'm happy that I picked it up. There's obviously a whole lot of depth here and I'm sure I'll get outclassed at a skill level quickly, but there's also a lot to do cooperatively against the AI so I can hopefully build my skills that way when I hit a ceiling.

Is there a substantial SP game? I'm not really keen on the MP gameplay.

I don't know how substantial, but there are storylines for all three factions. According to this there are 6 missions per storyline and they estimate 5.5 hours to complete the campaign. I'd say that sounds about right based on what I played. The missions also have collectibles for replay value if that's your thing.

It's definitely built to be a multiplayer deal, though, so you might want to wait for a sale if you're not into that. $60 for a 5.5 hour single player version of a multiplayer game, even with decent cutscenes, might feel a bit steep.

Not very substantial, like Ravenlock said. The meat of the game is in the multiplayer modes, but if you don't want to play online, the bots offer a very good challenge for any skill level.

This game is still pretty good if you want to gradually ramp up the difficulty or avoid multiplayer all together. It has a pretty good practice mode. The campaign has multiple difficulties with different cosmetic unlocks for each, and it also has collectibles. In addition, all of the multiplayer modes can be done solo or co-op against AI and it still gets you credit for the faction war, steel, daily objectives, and unlocks. Obviously the AI won't push you to the upper echelon of skill, but it isn't dumb and will force you to get a decent base for the mechanics. I have found dueling the AI to learn each character to be pretty fun and rewarding.

In both beta tests, the daily and weekly mission requirements were a mix of AI and human but mostly human leaving the AI option extremely limited in terms of experience and in game currency. Is this still the case? Is it possible to unlock everything in the game playing only the AI/co-op modes?

I really enjoyed the betas but I felt there just wasn't enough there to warrant a purchase and with single player only being 5 or so hours long this still seems to be the case unless they greatly improved the variety in multiplayer modes and increased the number of playable maps significantly.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to pass. $80 CDN is a bit rich for my blood.

I will say that I've been impressed by how challenging the AI bots are even on middling difficulty. I realize I'm just not very good at the game yet, but it's not just against me; when I get into an online match where more than 1 higher-than-low-level AI bot is there, they typically do very well against the humans in the match.

I play a little later on the West Coast, but I'm loving this game, always down to group up.

Dueling practice with like minded friends is probably a lot less stressful. Getting 4 CoGers into some 2v2s would be great just to practice some things (I cannot guard-break counter to save my like).

There is a MASSIVE jump from AI:1 to AI:2. I don't want to even know what AI 3 or 4 look like. I hope it's higher level strategy and not just reaction times dialed up to super-human levels.

Also, if you are buying the game soon, you might want to pick Viking as your faction for this first season (nothing to do with what class/hero you play as, separate metagame).

How many new maps are in the retail version as opposed to the beta?

12 maps in the full version, 6 in beta. The full version also has several variations for each map, like weather.

I think I'm gonna start sparring with level 2 bots. I had to fight one last night after my opponent left and it was more aggressive and accurate than its human counterpart.

So, who are your mains? I like Warden and Orochi, but mostly Orochi for his counters and potentially strong mixup play. I say potentially because my mixup play is utter shit right now. The learning curve in this game can be downright sadistic at times.

I'm doing Peacekeeper pretty much exclusively, because I feel like that'll train me to get good at the things I want to get good at (counters, quick dodges, and opportunistic grabs). Their ability to deflect by dodging in the direction of the blow is pretty sweet, too.
