Re-reading the original quote from Nintendo, I'm wondering if they are referring to the fiscal year. Changing that original quote with such information makes it seem much less dire (and also makes more sense):

Quote:
Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this [fiscal year]. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.
The fiscal year for Nintendo would probably be ending soon. I don't see why they would specify that it is the last shipment for the year if it is the last shipment ever.

If I can find one today I will snag it up, just because I am an idiot and Nintendo is my main focus with my collecting. My Raspberry Pi suits my emulation needs much better anyway.

That said, this is just really stupid.

Well, Nintendo may have brains after all.

I have my doubts, I was just proposing the possibility. This news makes it seem less likely.

Well, now I'm glad that I made a snap decision to wait on line for one at the Nintendo Store when I had some time to kill.

I was extremely lucky and found one used for $44 back in January. I read a comment that made some sense over on reddit. Basically, the Classic was Nintendo's holiday filler stock to have some sort of presence at retai during that empty transition time between Wii U and Switch. It sort of makes sense from that perspective.

They killed the Famicom Classic too and now all the sub-$100 listings are gone on Amazon. Dammit.

EDIT:

I actually waited in line on release day and picked one up. It was quite a ordeal, as I had been up all night doing remote training for some people in Asia, and caught like an hour of sleep before heading over to the nearest Target. I ended up getting out of bed an hour earlier than I wanted, but it was a good thing that I did as I was the last person in line to get one.

I opened that one and played it, but ended up flipping it the next day as the prices were too high to ignore. I picked up another one a week or so before the Switch launch, it was the only one to show up in a shipment to a nearby Walmart and I just happened to do a Brickseek search for it that night and got lucky.

I think that the ease of inserting new games onto the system has got someone over there worried, though I think that is a bit foolish considering how easy it is to emulate these games.

Whatevs, I have a fully functioning NES hooked up to a CRT in the same room as my NES Classic, so I never touch the thing anyway.

Same sitch. I already have all those carts, but I thought my daughter would enjoy playing around with one so I grabbed that used one. She hasn't touched it since a week after we got it.

Well, now I feel even less guilty about putting together a RetroPi box and dumping a bunch of ROMs on it.
