Nintendo Kills NES Classic

The hot gift for the holidays won't make it to the summer. Nintendo has confirmed that the current shipment of NES Classic systems headed out to stores will be the last for the mini console.

Quote:
Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.
Apparently the NES Classic was always intended to be a limited term product, and Nintendo extended it's life after the swell of consumer interest. But the mini console is still in short supply at retail, and the cessation of the product seems like a strange decision. They could be trying to push people towards the Switch (although I can't say with authority how many of these game are available on that platform's storefront), or may a new piece of bespoke, retro hardware is in the works at Big N?

I think from day one they were pushing people to a Raspberry Pi-based emulator system with the insanely short controller cable, the paltry selection of games, and incredibly limited supply.

I never liked this, but I can't say that I understand discontinuing it. Maybe they realized that VC titles draw people to their consoles, and that this might cut into Switch sales?

I like the idea of it, but I'm not a huge fan of the implementation. It's cool to have the original form factor on both the machine and controllers, but they really should have made those controllers wireless. Hopefully they fix that mistake for the SNES Classic, which is something I might actually be interested in purchasing.

Nintendo - where common sense is the exception rather than the norm.

Nothing about Nintendo surprises me anymore. I'm still holding off on the switch until I hear more about VC and the future of BC if any.

No matter what Reggie says, I just don't see how there's going to be any BC.

I have one sitting next to me NIB. Was going to give it as a gift. Should I hold onto it now?

You could probably scalp it on eBay around Christmas time for a ton of money! Maybe even enough to buy a Scorpio.

If that's true, we should all buy them right now on Amazon for $150 and hold onto them.

People will probably forget about it by then. Chances are the value is highest right now as people are worried about not being able to get them again.

If you buy these, sell them before E3. If Nintendo does release a SNES classic or something similar, their value crashes.

I am thinking they will announce a newer version, or something similar soonish. Something that sells out quickly and makes money...yea no way would they just stop it.

This is just bizarre, if they don't replace it with something else.

I was looking to grab one of these once they were easier to find, I guess that's out the window. If they don't end up replacing it, hey, fun little project to create a small, portable all-in-one emulator with small LCD and HMDI out.

It is stupid for Nintendo but as a consumer there are far better options. Never would buy one anyway.
