I always say "grocery store". Most people I know do the same. But I've heard a few just say grocery. Might call for a poll.

I think I'm long overdue at the petery, now that you mention it.

A grocer is a merchant. A grocery is an item of food to be purchased. Groceries is the plural of the purchaseable item. A grocery store is a store that sells groceries.

Dammit, now the word has lost all meaning.

See baker example. Is the bakery an item to be purchased, or is it the place where baked goods are sold? Fucking English.

I guess it's kinda like Europeans/Canadians and "I had to go to hospital". Around here, it's "I had to go to THE hospital" and you're weird for saying the other thing.

Anyway, I'm used to people saying either "go to the grocery" or "to the grocery store", and it's used interchangeably. I've never been called out on that one.

I mean, I wasn't meaning to call you out as wrong or weird or anything. Just different than what I'm used to and slightly amusing from my perspective.

No, of course. I'm having fun with it. I'm 39 years Texan, and a Louisiana Cajun before that. I'm used to having interesting vernacular.

But, since it's becoming THAT kind of thread, here's Mirriam (Fucking) Webster's take.

For me it's Oxford or nothing. But then Canada uses UK spellings.

I can't tell if this is good natured ribbing or just the fiercest sarcasm.
