Kindle vs. Nook?

I got the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight (it came in Friday; Suave got it for me as a[n early] birthday present.

So far, I like it a lot. I previous have had a 1st generation Nook, and a regular Nook Simple Touch.

Here's a bit of comparison with the Nook Simple Touch (essentially, they are exactly the same, but one has a light, and the light works well):


Side-by-side, the only way I know which one has the GlowLight is it has the weird grey trim.


Here, the one with the GlowLight has the light on about medium with the lights on.


Here is the same thing (medium GlowLight), with the lights off.


Finally, here is the one with the GlowLight on as high as possible with the lights off.

The lighting is a little more noticeable near the top of the screen, but I still find it to be a comfortable way to read. It feels more comfortable to me than a backlit screen.

I see what you mean by tech not advancing, but I wouldn't say it was pointless (for me, at least). I've met a lot of people at work who either didn't buy an ereader, or bought a tablet type one when they really wanted the e-ink because their significant other would complain about them reading with the light on at night. An e-ink screen with a booklight hanging in front of it isn't great, in my experience (emphasizes the slight glare of the screen, even if the screen is "matte"). I don't really like reading in the dark with a backlit screen, but it's probably less annoying to a sleep partner than a whole light being on. I was definitely hoping for something that was e-ink, but had a simple solution for reading at night (also nice if I'm to lazy to get up, walk across the room, and turn off the light when I'm ready to finally go to bed). I think this caters to that kind of person.

It's not just that; those supposed fast page-turns on both the new Kindle and Nook leave a lot of ghosting, especially if you read in a bright environment, because actual refresh rates haven't improved in the past 2 years, so they make the tech less useful for the sake of bullet-point signifying progress. Between this, and E-ink posting a massive loss, I think the days of EPD devices are numbered. Which is sad.

I don't mind using the Lighted Cover, while expensive it does add a layer of protection to the Kindle and the battery drain is minimal.

And on the ghosting, really? While the tech may not have changed much, I really see no issues on my KT. I turned off the feature that would do the ghosting because I can honestly wait that extra fraction of a second to get a full page refresh.

I haven't noticed any of the ghosting. I can't imagine that the faster page turning isn't worth the tradeoff.

What did you not like about the Nook Color? I still use mine every now and then. I went with the Kindle Fire for Hai because she will be on her moms Amazon account.

Unresponsive touchscreen, terrible store, the inability to side-load apps (my kindle fire now has Drop Box), and no real innovation. After I turned it into a tablet, the Nook app was basically crippled. I took notes on a story for class, and when I went to view those notes... I couldn't. I could go to the notes themselves, but there was no way to view the notes at all aside from holding down every highlighted word and editing the note again. It felt like notes was an after-thought to the whole deal. Not to mention, the home screen could only hold so many books.

Also, when they announced their Nook Tablet and it was just a slightly beefier Nook Color with almost no innovation? That does not bode well for the future.

Basically, it was a lot of little things that got to me. I weighed that against already having an Amazon Prime account, giving me access to movies and things for free, as well as books and library loaning. It's responsive, fast, and the battery lasts WAY longer. The screen is a tiny bit smaller (and I mean, millimeters of difference), but that doesn't bother me.

Barnes and Noble will probably not beat Amazon in the long term. I just jumped to the winning team, if anything.

Now that Microsoft is helping B&N with their tablet? Even better reason to jump ship. A nook that isn't on Android, thus making their own app store worthless? No thanks.

Also, cheap comics. Can finally read some Batman trades without breaking the bank.
