Dragon's Lair on XBLA - May 18
![]() Children of the 80's probably remember when Dragon's Lair first showed up in their neighborhood arcade. Well Microsoft has announced that the Don Bluth classic Laserdisc choose-your-own-adventure will be coming soon to XBOX Live Arcade. The marketplace already an accompanying theme, gamerpics, and a trailer available. According to the trailer, you will be able to play via controller, or by Kinect. Co-op is available (unknown at this time if co-op is online or local only), and you will be able to share your exploits via Kinect Photo Share. Will you save the princess? Your adventure awaits! Was there actually much game here? I never played it but I did play stuff like Road Avenger and it was basically a memorytest.

The Space Ace/Dragon's Lair/Time Cowboy games were all just big QTEs. And I loved them dearly.
They're more about watching to see how the hero can die horribly than 'play'. At least nowadays you're not sinking $25 worth of quarters into the machines

I'll get a few roll of quarters to give the game that old time feeling. I'll throw a quarter at my Xbox every time I have to start after a death.

These have been on PSN for quite a while, they just don't seem like they're worth buying. I always saw them as a waste in the arcade as a kid.

Wow, I remember seeing that machine, and watching people fail, then not having the balls to try it. Except once, where I died quickly, and ran like a bitch. I may have to brave this again. Now that I am a grown ass man, and less of a bitch... sorta.

It is just a series of animated scenes with basic input choices to select the next one. I am 99% sure there are DVD and Blu-Ray versions that you can just play using your remote.

Dragon's Lair was rather fun. The sequels and most of the other laserdisc games, not so much. The reason for that is Dragon's Lair would mix things up, you'd encounter randomly selected challenges that you'd get slightly better at each time you came across that particular challenge. It was kinda like Warioware. Simple, fairly fun.
The sequels were almost entirely linear - you're literally just memorizing a series of direction buttons that let you see a little more of the funny cartoon.

If there isn't already, somebody needs to build a Lego robot that can complete these games.

There's also a "Watch Mode" where you can just kick back and watch the story unfold.
![]() The little extra bitty in The Gunstringer made me nostalgic for the stuff. Was it a simple game? Sure. But it was in an age when most games were simple, and this had a sense of humour that many games lacked. Thus it's charm. I want to know how co-op is supposed to work... unless they've re-animated it???

It also still looks awesome, and the promise of a video game that has the fluidity of a cartoon but freedom of control still has yet to be fulfilled.

I actually saw the Blu-Ray version of this and Space Ace in one of the local stores today. Best thing: They were trying to sell the HD-DVD version as well for $20.
And they wonder why the store is closing...
