As someone who finds it hard to find friends, mostly because I'm an odd duck old college student so I have nothing in common with either the students or the adults in the area, I can sympathize. I know the advice is to "Just go out somewhere and talk to people!" but when you've got to work and do homework and work in the yard and all that shit, you don't have time to go out. Plus, it costs money.

On an odd note... I received a check for $750.00 from the college in the mail today, with NOTHING saying what it is. Refund for something? Then why is is an even amount? Scholarship or grant? Then why no "Congratulations!" letter. WTF?

I just take it as the last sign that it's time for a new life.

I've got nothing tying me down now. No friends, no love, no obligations.

I'm free as can be, and best of all? I'm only here for another 6 months. Short of something that gets me on statewide news nothing I do here matters anymore.

It's actually part of an ingenious psychological/sociological experiment.

Will you cash it?

If you do, will you spend it or hold onto it in case someone calls you to tell you it was a mistake?

If you do spend it, what do you buy?

If you don't cash it, why are you such a chicken?

That is exactly the thought process I'm going through!

The obvious answer is to go to the business office and ask, "What is this?" But that's no fun!

I've had this happen. Sometimes due to how your tuition was paid, student loans etc, you paid to much money. So this is a refund for paying to much tuition. If it really bothers you, you can go ask the bursar. Or look at your bill online if your school does that. It will state if it was a refund due to tuition.

I know this because I spent way to many years as a student

You are an evil man. Also someone who has spent way to many years in the MH system. Because that is something someone would do if they could get away with such an experiment with ethical restrictions the way they are now.

You need to not talk about the "Most Dangerous Game" before you get out there.

Not much gaming done today. I spent the day putting the finishing touches on ADD's room which she uses for her art and craft endeavors. Basically it's her "fem cave". I finally got around to setting up the Kinect that came with my SW Box. I remembered the wise advice from the Kinect Sage Karak: Put it high in the sky unworthy one. I placed the kinect on a shelf and it worked perfectly. ADD was fooling with it some and it looked neat.

I bought the Humble Indie Bundle to get Botanicula. Only played about 20 minutes worth but it is pretty neat. Gonna load it back up now. This is my first ever point & click adventure game too!

These are strange point and click adventures. Not very traditional at all. I like them enough, but they are very strange for me. It's not what I was expecting at all, but I'm not very familiar with this company's work. Though I did beat Samorost 1 a while back. Now I have some more of their games through the bundle, so I'll be able to become more familiar.

But I hesitate to call Botanicula a point and click adventure. It's a strange casual-esque hybrid maybe.

Well, it has been very entertaining for me so far. I played a couple hours tonight and then looked up a walkthrough to see how far I was. Looks like I am half way done with the game, or thereabouts, after about 3 hours of play.

I love the sound, graphics and creativity of the game, but I will admit some of the puzzles are starting to become head scratchers. I think it is due to the lack of direction in how the player can use the mouse to interact with occassional objects in the game, such as dragging or bending objects to solve puzzles. I kept on just mouse-clicking on object.

Oh, it occurred to me that I did play a few hours of the original Myst game a long time ago, so this would be my second, not first, adventure game.

Awesome. Ya I am 100% convinced that due to worries about legal issues they stated the normal hieght for the kinect. Mine is almost 2 feet higher and its accuracy is damn near pinpoint. So much so that people who have them play games on mine and comment on it all the time we play.

Glad you guys got it up and working.

You will enjoy this little anecdote. The Kinect is sitting high above on its new shelf. We are going through the on-screen setup but the message keeps saying "unit cannot move". I'm thinking it can't see ADD so I keep moving it closer to the edge so the unit can see down. Nothing. Tried this for a minute or two still nothing. I'm thinking maybe I need to find a way to attach it to the ceiling. Maybe i'll make a hanging shelf...then ADD mentions there is something on the unit that is causing the trouble. I'm now looking at it and I don't see anything. She takes it and removes the piece of styrofoam that keeps the neck of the unit safe in the box. After that it was seconds that it was up and running. I just pictured you laughing your ass off if you were here.

I was thinking that this might be one of the few experiments you can do these days. Maybe not the spying part to watch you sweat though.

If you do,that, you fail, the test and further envelopes of money will cease to arrive.

Oh, they're point & click adventures all right, but they're very minimalist. Think of them as silent movie examples of the genre. I will agree that it can be confusing at times because of the way they let you interact with random background objects which can lead to madness in later portions of the game when you misread the cues and think that something else is a solution to a puzzle when it's not, but the solutions do make sense when you realize you're going down the wrong path.

I was just 6 critter cards short of a full set when I finished the game. Sigh.

I played Fez for a bit more last night and stumbled across a whole new set of levels. This game is far too brainy for me but I'm hoping I can at least finish the game once, if nothing else. I might try to crack the cypher but I doubt I'll really work too hard at it.

I was going to ask about your ethics board or what you have their overseeing ethics in the social sciences in Canada. I was thinking about it if it could be done here. Not the spying part of course...depends though...you might be able to persuade an IRB here to allow it. But who does oversee that experiments/research are ethical?

I loved your silent movie comparison. I really do wish you could write for a game magazine.

Wow. I just realized that I had one hell of a run-on sentence back there. Ye gods.

My son was begging me to let him play WoW yesterday. I think I made a Minotaur character for him a while ago so I should see about letting him play again. If nothing else, he'll have to read more and reading is good.

So making it as a chef was too hard so you decided to pick up film production and acting? You make someone like me who majored in English and Philosophy look down to earth.

As for me, I have my first four hour comprehensive exam tomorrow. I haven't played anything all weekend as I've been studying. I actually cancelled a trip to a Shakespeare festival just to spend more time at home studying.

I have been preparing for the last four months, but I really worry that I'm just a sieve and most of that info has slipped right through, which tends to happen when you are reading quickly. I've been using my notes to make up more condensed study guides yesterday and this morning. It's just depressing because 30 books suddenly become a handful of things on notecards that I remember.

And I've just been eating tons of garbage because I'm so stressed. It's really absurd: potato chips, kondike bars, trail mix, microwaved burritos, etc. I feel utterly disgusting. I think at the end of this semester I am going to fast for at least 24 hours and start a new exercise routine. But first, I have to survive the next week...

I want to make profanity at you for this post.

There's a lot more to why I am not a chef anymore than it being "too hard." Thanks for trivializing me though, I really appreciate that, I assure you.

I wasn't trying to trivialize you. Sorry if my wording was bad. I recall you saying something akin to the fact that you came to the conclusion that you didn't have the required skills. That was actually my attempt at an awkward euphemism and a joke.
