Also if I'm reading the Monster board correctly one of them is simply named Kevin. Is that a nod to human 'monsters' like Jason/Mike Meyers or am I missing the horror joke? |

I could NOT stop laughing in the theater when I read 'The Scarecrow Folk'. I'm so glad they showed up. They had that slow motion scene with blood and straw. Hilarious.
I also loved the sting at the title card: the scream and everything was so funny

Just saw this. Wow, what an amazing premise. I thought the "Purge" was amazing. I totally geeked out!
![]() I love how the movie incorporated so many horror themes and characters. I'd love to read the backstory on a lot of these creatures. So much lore to draw on... My question is, witch or sexy witch?

So, I just saw this today. Gotta say, I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. The "horror cliches" were out in spades, and it amused me that at times, it followed exactly how you thought it would, then turned around and blindsided you.
Also, the number of Evil Dead references amused me to no end. The cabin itself, the trap door to the basement, the reading of latin from the necro... err, diary. The Angry Molesting Tree and Deadites written on the white board. Just cracked me up. I was trying to place some of the other monsters/references, and man, there were a ton, but I probably don't even know half. The spherical puzzle box and the guy associated with it reminds me of HellRaiser / Pinhead. I couldn't place the doll faces. The Grudge reference was pretty obvious. In the hallways while all hell was breaking loose, there was a young girl with long black hair that I think was just walking real slow with a guard trailing blood behind him being drug on the floor by telekenisis, I'm guessing, that made me think of Alma from Fear. And of course, the Killer Clowns from Outer Space / IT reference. Almost makes me want to watch it again just to try to see what else I can pick out. =)

Me and a friend were talking about the movie last night, and I think I identified kind of a big flaw with the story. Why the fuck are there like eight doors to the hell-beast elevators, right in the bottom of the base? What is their function? Why isn't that room more fortified (you know, by the stuff they make the elevator cubes out of)?

The other question I had was, why wasn't someone at the elevator controls to begin with? (or did I miss something there?)

For all its flaws and plot holes, this is easily my fave horror movie of all time.
Fun fact: In a pre-screening for the movie there was a Q&A with the director/co-writer. When asked if there was going to be a sequel his reply was 'Did you not just watch my movie?' When the stoner arrived with the super bong (I don't and never have smoked pot, but even I want one of those) I asked my wife which of the group was Scooby ![]() I loved the premise of it. The movie was also made as a response to all the 'torture porn and the devolution of the horror genre in recent years. In my opinion? A very well done movie all together. It had faults (the whole 'Purge' button was pushing it, but I loved every second after) but it was so worth it for me. I would love to see more of this lore and universe explored SOMEhow. Even if it's just comic prequels. It had something horror movies have been missing for a while as well that I was highly thrilled about: Humor. Basic little quips of humor. Final Thought? It gave me a husband's bulge. Quote:

I saw the 'Angry Molesting Tree' bit in the cinema and laughed.
I enjoyed the film a lot for many of the reasons above. Most of the plotholes have perfectly reasonable explainations, the only one I couldn't think of was why did everyone think when the elder gods rose that it would mean the end of the world?!?! Humans and the gods must have existed together before for the whole sacrifice thing to get set up, we might have been slaves or toy things to them like gods treat humans in many settings, so wiping humans out didn't make a lick of sense. They agreed to stay down for the sacrifices, so they could have rose anytime. It would have made more sense to say that the sacrifices were part of some binding that kept them down when humans rose up and deposed them. Hence that would make sense why they would wipe us out if they ever got out. The purge was great, and the unicorn and merman bits were hilarious. Lots of geeky referencs I got. One of my friends bet me £100 that there would be a sequel. So I've got that money to look forward to, since he seemed convinced that whole end was a "Set up for the next one"..... Yeah..... did he not just watch that film?

I see your point. Either way, humans had to have been around for quite some time for it all to actually begin.
Plus, the 'horror movie' show was being put on for a reason: they had a 'captive' audience and had to keep them entertained. Hell, the director alluded towards it during her villain speech at the end. The Old Gods weren't simply content with the killings anymore. They wanted a show.

Fair enough, but then that still makes no sense as to the end of the world scenario.
It'd be like you destroying the whole internet if you got rick rolled once. You don't wipe out your ONLY source of entertainment.

The images at the beginning show that sacrifices go back a ways.

That still doesn't explain my issue though. I know they commented things like "Back in the day you could just throw a woman in a volcanoe!"
The gods just seem weird, why agree to stay placated by sacrifices, only to wipe out the entire world should they not maintain them, and then be left on your own for eternity. it's a nitpick though, so I'm not bothered, it was just the only thing that made no sense to me.

IN the year 5000 BCE, throwing someone into a volcano was theater. Now? It probably wouldn't be allowed and it still wouldn't be all that exciting. So they have to create a super secret global society to handle sacrifices in a way that's also theatrical.
In fantasy/horror there's a concept called sympathetic magic, where the beliefs of the public at large can shape the magic. I see the evolution of sacrifices being similarly linked to humanity's beliefs. More people now are probably afraid of Torture Puppets or ShakyCam Ghosts or Redneck Torture Zombies than an old testament or Lovecraftian god.

I'd have prefer had the stoner made note of why the whole set up was required to poke fun at it if that's how it was supposed to be. I mean, he picked at every other illogical setup, as to why they were splitting up, etc. Why the gods would agree to stay down only to wipe everyone out should the sacrifice fail could have done with him going "How does that even make sense!"
