The man who gave rock one of its key visual and sonic props has died. Jim Marshall, known as "The Father of Loud" for inventing the Marshall amplifier, was 88 years old.

If there is any justice in the world, his funeral will feature Brian May, Eddie Van Halen and Tony Iommi standing in front of a giant wall of Marshall amps and simultaneously doing a power chord (with a Pete Townshend "windmill" motion).

I had an old (but not collectible) Fender modified to original Marshall JTM 45 specs. Fender amps actually started with an almost perfect copy of the JTM 45, which was why my amp guy was able to make the changes so easily.

I'll play a song in D Minor on it now. The saddest of all keys.
