Upgraded my SP-101 a couple months ago. Added a Meprolite tritium front sight and Crimson Trace laser grip (also a larger grip for my larger hands). Got a trigger job done at the same time, reducing a 15+ pull down to about 9. Smooooth.

If I could afford a Five-Seven, I would buy one in a heartbeat. They seem like a ton of fun, and it just feels like a future gun. Got to finger fuck one in a store when I pawned my Xbox. It's a nice grip on it.

Sadly, it cost almost $1200 ...

I might consider one if they were like $400. At what they actually cost, they're a complete joke.

Ergos are meh at best, they have the single worst safety lever design I've seen on any handgun ever, and they fire an expensive cartridge that's ballistically underwhelming.


In happier news, I got to fondle the brand spanking new M&P Shield the other day. If I hadn't just spent a ton of cash upgrading my PC, I'd probably have walked out of the store with it. Should compliment the M&P9FS I already carry nicely.

And just to be clear, I have had the chance to shoot an FsN a few times. Meh. It makes a loud, impressive bang, but if that was my criteria for a handgun, I'd just get something that spits 7.62 Tok.

I've handled one as well. Although I'd always had it on the backburner as a future gun purchase, I've written it off. At $400 it'd be hard to walk away from a lightweight gun with low recoil and a 20-round mag. But all things considered, you'd get better performance and more rounds from a Kel-Tec PMR-30, and for a third the price. Doesn't look as cool, but actually packs more punch and holds more rounds (30).

40 gr FN 5.7x28mm (Five-seveN) = 290 ft/lbs energy at 1,800 ft per second
40 gr .22 WinMag (PMR-30) = 324 ft/lbs energy at 1,910 ft per second

Lighter cartridge, less recoil, more stopping power, easier to suppress...and much cheaper to purchase ($0.07 per round, as compared to $0.50 per round for 5.7x28) . The only upside that the FN round has to the .22 WMR is an effective range of 150 yds over 125 yds - both of which are much farther than anyone is going to be shooting at with a pistol.

I agree with Slack3r - unless you're in it for the novelty, the 5.7x28 mm round just isn't worth the cost. It's a novelty.



Side note: does it bug the piss out of anyone else that the characters on Sons of Anarchy call it the "FN Fifty-Seven"?

Oh, the Five-Seven would definitely be a novelty.

But then, so would the PMR-30.

I don't really buy guns for practical purposes anymore. I've left that road behind me.

Something about everything Kel-Tec makes, with that handle and other details- it's like the makers of Igloo ice chests decided to make guns. I sorta like 'em.

It's a Kel-Tec thing.

I was actually considering cleaning the M&P after posting those pics. Then I realized I'm out of solvent anyway. Oh well, with 1500 rounds of crud, what's another few hundred more?

Kel-Tecs are definitely ugly/interesting. But their KSG shotgun is becoming mainstream (was featured in Modern Warfare 3), their RFB bullpup is an unholy terror, and the P-3AT is still - I believe - the lightest .380 auto available.

Unrelated in most ways I use a RFB in airsoft, identical size and unfortunately weight. But god damn is the thing comfortable to shoot. I could see owning a real one.

I usually give some care to the feed ramp. The silver spots in that photo aren't finish wear; it's what the entire feed ramp is supposed to look like. It's just that caked in carbon build up.

Really, all I care about is a clear bore, clear feed ramp, and clear rails. I'll spray down action components once in a blue moon, but as long as the gun feeds, I don't really care.

Honestly, if I *couldn't* subject a gun to this sort of abuse and have it keep running, I wouldn't trust it anyway.
