$169 Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0

Today's woot is the Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0, a hybrid device that Samsung's been threatening to release in the US all year (and still technically haven't). While Samsung lists it as a PMP (Personal Media Player), I call it a hybrid because it seems to straddle current product categories; it's essentially a phone without cell connectivity like Apple's iPod Touch, but with a humongous 5" 480x800 screen which makes it god damned huge for an MP3 player or phone... and yet a bit tiny for a tablet.

On the upside, it sports a 2,500mAh battery, which Samsung claims is good for 60 hours of music (60 hours!) or 8 hours of movies (hey, none too shabby), as compared to the 1,530mAh battery in Acer's much more expensive Iconia Tab A100 7" tablet, which only hits about 5 hours of movies according to reviews. It has 8GB of internal storage, and supports another 32GB using MicroSD. On the downside, it uses a single-core ARM Cortex A8 Hummingbird (manufactured by Samsung), and ships with Android 2.2 Froyo, though an upgrade to Gingerbread is promised.

At $169 (plus woot's standard $5 s&h), I think this is an absolute steal. The device isn't available in the US at all yet, and is expected to sell for around $269 when it finally shows up.

Head on over the woot to check it out. I already ordered one, partly because I've been waiting for this to arrive here since sometime in February (or rather the smaller 4" version at a higher price), and partly out of frustration at having missed the HP TouchPad fiesta. It should make a pretty decent ereader and general entertainment device, and if not, I suspect it'll be pretty easy to sell.

So, this may seem like a silly question, but this can get and use droid apps, right?

I currently have a current version of the Android MyTouch Slide from Tmobile so I'm trying to see what I would be missing out on if I don't get that Samsung handheld device. I've always wanted a palm size "tablet" but rather it have 3g/4g internet connection...

Still debating on if this is worth getting or not.

Yes, it has full access to Google's Android Market.

You can stop debating; they're sold out.

For anyone interested in one of these, Samsung just announced the upcoming US release for October 16th. They'll be selling for $269, and unlike the one on its way to me right now, will apparently come stock with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. They also announced that the 4 inch version will be available on the same date for $229.

Mine should arrive on the 28th according to Fedex's estimate, but I'm sorely tempted to leave it in its packaging and try to flip it. It's awfully attractive considering they'll be selling for ~$100 more than I paid, and I imagine I can get a tidy premium over that if I sell it before the full release, assuming folks get at all excited about the product.

Decisions, decisions...
