Steam Adding F2P Games

Valve is opening up Steam to a wave of Free to Play (F2P) games:

Spiral Knights
Forsaken Worlds
Champions Online: Free for All
Global Agenda: Free Agent
Alliance of Valliant Arms.

While some of these games had been available on Steam, this is the debut for others. It also marks the first time you'll be able to use your Steam Wallet for in-game transactions. Starting tomorrow, Steam will also be running a "F2P game of the day", where free in-game content will be awarded if you play that game on that day.

Valve says that more F2P games will be coming to Steam, but has not yet released a list. The publishers involved - Atari, Sega, Hi Rez, Perfect World and NHN - have many more F2P games available and in the pipeline, so assume that at least some of them will be coming to Steam as well.

I wholeheartedly support this move, especially if they're discerning about the F2P titles they add.

Smart move on Valve's part. You get people using you F2P games on Steam and then you pull a Facebook and say if you want to continue to use Steam as a platform, you have to use SteamCoins for in-game purchases and Valves takes 5%.

I don't see Steam going that route with it, and if they did I'd almost certainly not pay for anything in those games.

So, to be clear, does free to play in this instance mean a free game, or an MMO that you have to buy but with no subscription fee?

It means no purchase price and no subscription fee.

Don't know anything about those titles, but I can speak well about the 2 F2P games that were already on Steam: America's Army 3, and Trackmania Nations.

Spiral Knight is almost unanimously considered good. I've enjoyed what I've played.

Why? Should Steam not make any money on a game you play on its service? You do know they get a cut of the price of every game and piece of DLC you buy on Steam, right? If you buy a game at Target, should Target not get any money from that transaction?

This is definitely a good thing. I'm sure they'll expand on this in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see DDO and LOTRO appear on Steam soon.

Global Agenda was fun when I played it. Tried Alliance and its just Counterstrike clone. Installing Champions now, i've wanted to try that game for awhile now.

EDIT - Just tried Spiral Knights and I do like it. Great how it uses your steam account instead of creating a new account with segapass. Also adds your steam friends who play it to the friends in game.

After trying Spiral Knights last night I can safely say all 3 games suck. Enjoy it poor people.

Spiral Knights is actually a lot of fun. My enjoyment of it went up ten-fold when I started using a 360 controller.

They should put World of Tanks on there, probably be plenty of players who would be happy going through Steam to get their gold.

Is World of Tanks actually out now? Last I heard it was still in beta, although I haven't been following it for quite some time.
